    Job Description

COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), to work closely with the MITEI executive team to set the strategic direction for its activities and initiatives. Will develop the strategy for external communications and events related to our three focus areas--research, education, and outreach; manage five MITEI staff and external contractors; and collaborate with the MIT News Office, Office of the Vice President for Research, MIT schools and departments, and representatives across campus. Responsibilities include managing team members with expertise in writing, editing, digital content creation and production, and event logistics and production; identifying communications needs and defining primary communications objectives, audiences, mechanisms, and key messages; managing and overseeing staff on all aspects of media and public relations, e.g., developing press releases and media campaigns, staffing interviews and press events, updating media lists, developing/maintaining reporter relationships, preparing speeches and presentations, etc.; overseeing staff responsible for MITEI major events; developing and supervising development of key external communications; working with external partners including MITEI members and government entities.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor's degree; at least seven years’ related experience, including at least five managing professional staff; national and international media relations experience; excellent oral and written communication skills; experience working in the climate and energy sector and directly with executive-level management; experience managing the marketing, communications, and/or public relations functions for an organization; digital fluency; and ability to work both independently and as part of a team and with employees and contractors who have expertise in digital production. PREFERRED: master’s degree, familiarity with MIT’s structure and systems, and interest in or experience working in academia. Job #23340-11There will be occasional evening work and travel.10/20/23
