  • Master’s degree required.

  • A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, preferably in a highly complex institution

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Terminal degree strongly preferred.

  • A strategic mindset and ability to move initiatives from the creation phase into a concrete action plan.

  • Ability to effect change in a complex, decentralized organization through influence and relationships without direct lines of authority.

  • Demonstrated experience and success building trust in a complex and highly collaborative work environment.

  • Familiarity with theoretical frameworks that inform the undergraduate, graduate, professional student experience. Experience in working with both undergraduate and graduate students and an understanding of the unique issues within each community.

  • Successful experience as a strategic leader and demonstrated ability to execute complex and ambitious plans

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate broadly across stakeholder groups, cultivate and sustain collegial relationships, and build unity around difficult and complex issues.

  • Demonstrated commitment to developing structures, policies, and practices that promote equity, inclusion, and belonging

  • A commitment to consult extensively with a willingness to act decisively when needed.

  • Must be adaptable, thorough, and able to work with substantial independence, including leading meetings with senior faculty and staff.

  • Flexibility, adaptability, and resourcefulness to meet ever-changing needs

  • Excellent judgment and discretion essential.

  • Exceptional writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills essential.

Monday through Friday. 35 hours per week.Job Function:General Administration Job-Specific Responsibilities:Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Promote and facilitate coordination and information sharing among Harvard’s Schools. Analyze issues that impact student life across the University and recommend viable courses of action and advising on policies in matters dealing with students. Identify opportunities for collaboration, efficiencies, and improved services from shared resources.

  • Regularly assess student needs and partner with the Council of Deans of Students (CODOS) to develop strategies for issues that impact students across the University.

  • Serve as advisor and sounding board for School Deans of Students on issues within their School.

  • Partner with the Office for Labor and Employee Relations (OLER) to oversee the University’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the Harvard Graduate Student Union-United Auto Workers (HGSU-UAW). Leads the University’s bargaining team in negotiating CBAs with the HGSU-UAW, ensuring that Schools’ and programs’ interests are represented appropriately.

  • Promote student mental health and well-being across all student communities. Oversee the implementation of recommendations from the Task Force on Managing Student Mental Health, working together with Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) and key campus partners. Key deliverables include launching a campaign on mental health awareness and culture change, increasing access to mental health services, and addressing potential service gaps.

  • Serve as a visible and vocal advocate for issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, working together with the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging, the Office for Gender Equity, and School Deans of Students to identify systematic barriers within the community.

  • Develop channels for student engagement and feedback on University-wide issues.

  • Be highly visible with the broad campus community and support initiatives within the 13 Schools.

  • Serve as a convenor for other cross-school student issues such as cross-school teaching.

  • Chair the University Accessibility Committee.

  • Directly manage the Associate Director for Student Engagement, who oversees the Harvard Graduate Council and University-wide Student Groups, and a half-time coordinator.
