  • Bachelor’s degree in planning or related field required.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in planning or a related field; an advanced degree may count toward years of experience.

  • Expertise in a range of computer software tools, including MS Office, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Advanced degree in planning or a related field preferred.

  • Organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail, balancing multiple projects and deliverables.

  • Clear graphic communication (layout for presentations, reports, and engagement materials; mapping and 2D diagrams; informational graphics).

  • Strong written and verbal communication (planning reports, memoranda, and day-to-day communication).

  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills.

  • Ability to work within the context of a complex and dynamic organization and independently as needed.

  • Demonstrated experience working with multiple internal and external constituencies.

  • Experience with community engagement processes and public speaking preferred.

Monday through Friday. 35 hours per week.Job Function:General Administration Position Description:Harvard University Planning and Design (HUPAD) (https://hupad.harvard.edu/) is responsible for the stewardship of one of the world’s most iconic campus settings and advances Harvard’s mission of teaching and research by enhancing, sustaining, and optimizing the physical campus to achieve planning and design excellence. Within HUPAD, there are several teams that focus on campus planning, complementary non-institutional planning, and management of the University's planning resources. The hiring unit for this position focuses on near and long-term land-use strategies, planning approaches, design policies, and placemaking tactics for non-institutional properties that complement the Harvard University campus. This includes planning for transformative-scale, mixed-use urban districts, as well as major, performative infrastructure, and significant new public realm projects.

Summary

Harvard University Planning and Design (HUPAD) seeks a dedicated, resourceful, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an Associate Planner. Under the supervision of the Sr. Manager for Planning and Design, the successful candidate will provide planning and project management support, with a primary focus on Harvard’s extensive district-scale, non-institutional property in Allston and beyond. Applicants should have strong research, analysis, and communication skills (graphic, written, and oral). Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Engage in all aspects of HUPAD’s planning and project work, including physical planning, urban design, regulatory approvals, transportation planning, research, writing, development of graphics and renderings, data analysis, and community engagement.

  • Support internal and external planning and project efforts, meetings, and coordination with consultants, including preparing materials, documenting decisions, and monitoring status and next steps.

  • Produce high-quality work products, including graphic presentations, planning documents, meeting summaries, and memoranda on a range of planning and design topics.

  • Perform research, collect data, synthesize findings, and prepare reports, maps/graphics, and presentations for internal and external audiences and decision-makers.

  • Collaborate with colleagues at the University responsible for planning, project management, transportation, legal, permitting, sustainability, and public affairs.

  • Lead project management efforts such as process schedules, contracts, invoice and reimbursement processing, meeting documentation/minutes, record keeping, updating internal systems, and coordinating meetings.

  • Manage external service providers, including planners, designers, engineers, and other consultants.

  • Assist in the coordination of permitting efforts for a range of projects.

  • Assist in the coordination of stakeholder and community engagement efforts for a range of projects.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
