    Job Description

ASSISTANT COLLECTIONS MANAGER, MIT Museum, to help oversee the care and safety of the museum’s collections and help plan and execute all aspects of the move into a new offsite collections center. Responsibilities will include planning inventory projects, including preparing workstations, ordering supplies, developing written workflows and guidelines, and carrying out any preliminary work required to prepare the collections; helping research object number problems during the inventory projects and reconciling records at the end of the move; overseeing and coordinating packing and shipping/receiving with outside vendors, including fine art shippers and movers; working with the inventory and packing teams to coordinate the ordering and delivery of supplies; coordinating building/storage access to temp hires, interns, volunteers, and other outside vendors; helping with the transport logistics for the move, including updating location records, maintaining shipping and container records in Airtable, preparing packing and shipping lists, and printing container labels; assisting with rehousing, building supports, and packing objects; assisting with pulling and returning artifacts from storage; assisting with inventory as needed, including cataloging, auditing, object cleaning, and photography; and performing other duties as assigned. May also maintain Excel spreadsheets, process images, and perform data entry and record creation using Mimsy.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree, preferably in museum studies; at least three years of experience working in a similar position in a museum environment; experience handling a variety of museum artifacts; working knowledge of the principles and practices of collections management and care, preventative conservation methods, and registration methods; experience using museum databases; ability to work independently or as a team member; and proficiency with Microsoft Office products. PREFERRED: advanced degree and skill using Mimsy. Job #23025-6 Work conditions: maneuvering weights of up to 50 lbs., remaining in one position for long periods of time, ascending and descending stairs and ladders, and using hand and electric tools.
