Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Sr. Business Development Director, Innovation in Brookline, Massachusetts

Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer, the Senior Business Development Director will be responsible for identifying new opportunities and developing strategic relationships with industry partners. The SVP has recently reorganized the Innovation office with the vision of creating a relationship focused and creative partnering team. The goal of this newly designed team is to make Dana-Farber research, technology and clinical tools increasingly more accessible outside of DFCI through swift and effective development and commercialization that improve the lives of patients and lead to near term revenue generation. We are looking for someone who is highly creative, energetic and entrepreneurial and will bring an urgency to this role. Dana-Farber’s new CEO, Dr. Laurie Glimcher is positioning DFCI as “open for business” more than ever before providing more room to innovate in therapeutics, technology and clinical care. This new role will lead a small, existing team that will grow with the success of the office.
Work with senior DFCI leadership to develop partnerships around key strategic initiatives and assess and analyze new opportunities with key institutional priorities
Build a BD pipeline with potential partnering prospects across life sciences, device companies, digital health and technology organizations. Understand industry needs and opportunities, and ultimately identify, negotiate, and close deals.
Develop and drive an effective business development process to place Dana-Farber technologies with industry and generate support for DFCI research efforts
Manage and enhance high-level relationships with DFCI faculty and other internal as well as external stakeholders to ensure that DFCI remains an academic partner of choice.
Work closely across the DFCI scientific and clinical clusters in Innovation office to identify, develop and produce new business opportunities (e.g., licensing deals, new cos, etc.)
Work with DFCI PIs and licensing team to provide ongoing service on issues related to technology transfer and business development, assess the commercial potential and market opportunity of new inventions coming from their labs, and develop and implement innovative strategies to market and license these emerging technologies and inventions
Work with other internal groups to advance complex high-priority projects including business plans and new venture formation
Build relationships with major pharma and biotech organizations and other types of industry that DFCI has not previously partnered with - to facilitate technology development and increase the potential of sponsored research from these sources
Provide expert knowledge of the biotechnology marketplace and methods of technology valuation and providing leadership in the team effort to license these technologies
Work with IP Counsel, Business Development Manager and licensing team to evaluate, market, package and license inventions, to maximize "value" to DFCI through collaborations with industry
Provide key contributions to term sheet and contract negotiations and relevant interactions both internally and externally to optimize outcomes
Working closely with internal team members (across all functional areas) and relevant counterparts externally to fully support potential deals
Actively network with industry organizations to establish relationships and to identify potential opportunities.
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications to be considered for this role:
An advanced scientific degree in biological sciences or related discipline with an advanced degree in business. Ten to fifteen years of relevant experience in positions involved with licensing, technology transfer, marketing, corporate partnering, venture capital, deal making, business development, or business incubation in a corporate or academic setting. Must have a proven track record performing complex strategic negotiations that have driven substantial revenue. Must have management experience.
Business/corporate development or startup experience and senior level contacts primarily in pharma and life sciences preferred. Experience dealing with patent and licensing law and practices and related legal agreements. Skills needed to negotiate agreements within a highly complex and demanding organization.
Our ideal candidate has extensive experience in opportunity strategic evaluations, due diligence, and negotiations of partnership/M&A agreements as well as:
A broad business understanding (particularly of the pharmaceutical/biotech industry) and the ability to coordinate cross-functionally is essential.
Strong project management and project leadership skills, as well as the ability to execute plans/projects on aggressive timetables, are essential.
Ability to thrive in a team environment with collaborative approach while taking responsibility for key initiatives
Solid understanding of commercialization and the principles of drug discovery and development
Experience in sell side negotiation in pharma or VC deals
