Humana VP, Experience Design in Boston, Massachusetts

Against that backdrop, we are seeking an accomplished leader for the newly-created position of Vice President, Experience Design. In this critical position, you will lead Humana's design and user experience efforts, driving innovation and excellence across all digital and service touchpoints. This role requires a visionary leader with a deep understanding of design principles, user-centered design practices, and the ability to translate business objectives into exceptional customer experiences. You will regularly collaborate on multi-disciplinary teams, including product management, marketing, engineering, analytics, customer service, care management, and sales, to deliver cohesive and impactful design solutions that align with Humana's strategic goals.

This position will report to the SVP, Experience and Transformation and will lead an organization of 65-70 associates (not including contractors), with 6 direct reports, and we expect this organization to grow over the next year. We strongly prefer that this position be located in one of our major employment hubs (Chicago, Louisville, Washington D.C., or Boston). Relocation assistance will be offered for those locations. Other locations may be considered for exceptional candidates on a case-by-case basis.

Key Responsibilities :

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive experience design strategy that aligns with Humana's overall vision and business objectives

  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of designers, UX/UI experts, researchers, and other creative professionals

  • Establish and maintain design standards, guidelines, and best practices across all products and services

Innovation and Vision

  • Champion a customer-centric approach to design, ensuring that the user experience is prioritized in all product and service development

  • Identify and implement new design trends, tools, and technologies that can enhance the customer experience

  • Drive innovation through creative problem-solving and a deep understanding of emerging design trends and consumer behaviors

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with senior leadership across Humana's lines of business to integrate design into the overall strategy

  • Collaborate with product management, marketing, engineering, distribution, and other departments to ensure seamless execution of design initiatives

  • Present design concepts, strategies, and results to executive stake holders, clients, and partners

Team Development

  • Recruit, hire and retain top design talent, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement

  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for team members

  • Create an inspired, inclusive and empowered team, able to thrive through change

  • Oversee resource allocation, project prioritization and performance management within the design team

Design Execution

  • Oversee the design process from concept to launch, ensuring that all design outputs meet the highest standards of quality and creativity

  • Manage the design lifecycle, including user research, prototyping, testing, and iteration

  • Ensure consistency and coherence in brand identity, visual language, and use interface across all products and platforms

Key Candidate Qualifications

In general terms, the ideal candidate will possess extensive experience (typically 20+ years) in design and user experience, with several years in a senior leadership role. He/she will be a visionary thinker with a passion for creating exceptional user experiences and a deep understanding of user-centered design principles, methodologies, and best practices. This person will also have a proven track record of leading successful design projects from concept through execution. Finally, the ideal candidate will be a strong leader of people with proven success in expanding and elevating the capabilities and performance of a creative team.

In addition to the above, the following technical qualifications and personal attributes are also sought:

  • Experience in both digital and physical product design is highly desirable, with proficiency in design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, and others

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use data to inform design decisions

  • An innovative mindset, with a strong drive to challenge the status quo, and demonstrated resilience in managing change and transformation

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the polish, poise, and executive presence that will ensure effective interaction with senior and executive level audiences, including conveying complex design concepts to non-design audiences.

  • Current or recent experience in a large, highly matrixed company (i.e., Fortune 150), with proven ability to influence leaders and key stakeholders in such an environment

  • Highly collaborative mindset and excellent relationship-building skills, including the ability to engage many diverse stakeholders and SMEs and win their co-ownership in the outcome

  • Demonstrated ability to toggle effortlessly between strategic and tactical activities

  • Current or recent experience in the healthcare or insurance industry is desirable, but not required

  • Adaptable and open to change, with a focus on continuous learning and improvement

  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
