The Vice President of Corp Development & Strategic Partnerships will assist the SVP in the development of inorganic growth strategies, and executing against these strategies through key strategic alliances, marketing partnerships, M&A and other corporate development activities to support overall Company objectives. This individual would work with stakeholders including directly with the executive teams to identify areas of partnership or M&A opportunities and handling complex deals across Cengage’s business and product units. This person will be also responsible for working with senior leaders externally to deliver results. The role will develop scalable processes that enable better engagement with internal stakeholders and external partners.

What you'll do:

  • Work with product and business unit leadership team to proactively identify business needs over multiple horizons and prioritize areas for 3rd party partnerships or acquisitions including technology providers, student ancillary products, content, and distribution.

  • Develop and contribute to development of strategies to drive growth.

  • Lead all aspects of pipeline development, source potential partners, conduct due diligence and assess partner alignment with strategic needs of business.

  • Drive deal negotiations holistically, including commercial, financial, legal, and operational aspects of agreement, in collaboration with business and functional teams including Legal, Finance, Strategy and other teams.

  • Advise on the impact of partnerships on business, product margins and scalability. Manage cross functional team(s) interests and expectations.

  • Proactively develop relationships with potential acquisition targets or partners. Maintain a robust and growing network of contacts in the educational technology industry and participate in education events. Support activities to make Cengage a “partner of choice” among potential partners.

  • Maintain existing partner relationships. Convene business review meetings with key partners. Develop/maintain Salesforce and other tools for partner management as well as internal team collaboration.

  • Lead and develop own team to accomplish objectives. Responsible for planning, staffing, budgeting, and other activities for the team.

  • Advance internal teams' understanding of emerging industry trends and technologies.

Skills You Will Need Here:

  • MA/MS/MBA with proven achievement preferred (BA/BS acceptable)

  • 10+ year relevant work experience, including strategic partnerships, corporate development, M&A or corporate strategy

  • Minimum of 3 years previous experience working at a technology, media, or education firm or within other industries working with other digital or technology product and engineering teams

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate complex deals. Prior end-to-end deal experience (including research, sourcing, modeling and execution) required

  • Strong modeling skills. Strong understanding of financial statements.

  • Experience with driving different types of transactions (licensing, technology integration, co-marketing, M&A, etc.)

  • Participate in and lead cross-functional teams

  • Proven track record to recognize industry change, develop understanding of long-term implications, strategic and analytical thinking, strong capability of project management and problem solving skills, sound judgment and a willingness to resolve issues and problems in a timely manner

  • Excellent communications skills: the ability to develop rapport and credibility across the organization and promote ideas and proposals persuasively

  • Comfort with and eagerness to tackle ambiguous problems

  • Highly collaborative and able to influence. Should embrace, support and practice a collaborative style which goes beyond relationship building. Will achieve results with and through others

  • Prior experience leading 2-3 team members.

  • Ability to travel up to 25%
