VMware Vice President of Business Applications, Digital Commerce - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Boston, Massachusetts

Chief Digital Transformation Office (CDTO) leads this charter of building unified commerce platform and there is a huge opportunity for a leader passionate about engineering to build the transformational building blocks across the domains of Quote to Order Management through Fulfillment and underlying technology platforms. This is a highly visible, high-impact leadership role within the CDTO organization  

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

We need an engineering executive with a proven track record to lead the engineering teams working on Quote to Fulfillment business systems/domains. This role will have engineering responsibilities across the above mentioned multiple domains, multiple platforms and across multiple geographies. Transforming into the unified commerce systems and implementing SaaS & Subscription business models is inherently a complex task and is a much more sophisticated engineering problem. The role will be leading a team of skilled engineers to get us closer to our goal of completing the business transformation and leading into becoming the leader of multi-cloud, grow the business through SaaS & Sub business models at the same time significantly improve the operational effectiveness. 

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?

The role strategic in nature. The role plays a significant impact on overall SaaS & Subscription transformation journey in which Quoting and Order management domains plays an extremely crucial part. The work becomes the foundation of our SaaS business and ongoing growth. The role impacts initial foundation building of unified commerce platform and first set of BU migration into SaaS and subscription models in the first year, driving the adoption and significant growth across BU in the next 3 years and driving ongoing growth/further consumption/upselling/cross selling in the long term.

The role collaborates with cross functional teams delivering on the combined business outcomes and also influence the cross functional teams on aligned approaches, priorities, best practices etc.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?

This is an executive engineering leadership role. We expect hands-on, pulling up the sleeves when needed, but not micro-managing leadership. This will require a deep understanding of complex distributed systems, fundamentals of computer science, and experience in delivering large-scale enterprise systems software. Your team will both have exclusive service ownership and co-development of additional new services. Your team will also have site reliability engineers (SREs) who will be driving high availability and resiliency through automation. Providing metric-based periodic updates on projects and services is critical for the success of the leader and the broader site. Experience in managing remote and distributed engineering teams for a global technology company is a plus.

The work across quote to fulfillment domains is quite new and going through transformation journey; so work is a combination of maintaining current systems, building new transformation flows and evolving current systems into transformed state strategically. Many areas are going through NEW technology platforms as well.

This position is required to drive Engineering disciplines within CDTO at the same time influence the best practices/disciplines across all of the engineering teams involved in the SaaS and Sub transformation.

*What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?  *

The role will lead quote to fulfillment domains within the overall lead to cash flow and underlying platforms along with quality Engineering and Dev Ops functions.

The role will have 5 direct reporting lines - Quoting, Order Mgmt, Billing & Monetization &Payments, Quality Engineering and DevOps. The structure might be changed for further optimization and expanded.

The role will have 250 FTE plus another 250 contractors across different geographies - predominantly in the US and India

We have a strong product and engineering culture at VMware. You are expected to embrace the culture of platform and systems thinking and be comfortable with co-development with other engineering executives. In addition, you are expected to provide technical leadership while mentoring/coaching the leaders in your team and creating a safe environment for learning and growing.
