Optum's innovative Digital Research Network (DRN) is an integrated research offering developed to support design, start-up, and execution of clinical studies that are faster, utilize fewer resources, and are grounded in real-world clinical practice. We have unparalleled access to Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Claims data from the greatest number of healthcare providers, both through ownership and through our existing relationships with over 50 of the top Integrated Delivery Networks in the USA. Furthermore, we are the only company offering clinical research services that, through our Business Associate Agreements and other agreements with Healthcare Organizations (HCOs), allows us to re-identify back to clinical investigators patients who are eligible for clinical trials so that they may be enrolled into the study.

The Vice President, DRN Business Development and HCO Site Network Growth is a hands-on Business Development role carrying responsibility and accountability for specific growth targets for building and developing the DRN HCO site network. In addition, the role will involve partnering with the Optum Life Sciences Growth Office to provide support for the commercialization of the DRN to biopharmaceutical and medical device/diagnostic sponsors.

This leader will work in partnership with Optum Life Sciences leadership, DRN leadership, Growth Office leadership, Provider leadership, OptumCare leadership, legal, and external partners. This business leader may also lead strategic initiatives and work with leadership on external collaborations, including partnerships and acquisitions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Carries primary responsibility and accountability for specific growth targets for the DRN HCO site network to enable expansive access to patients for participation in clinical studies

  • Primary interface between the DRN and HCOs targeted for recruitment to the DRN

  • Contribute to HCO recruitment strategy and develop plan and forecast for growth with regular updates

  • Primary relationship manager for HCOs recruited to the network

  • Collaborate with the DRN clinical and operations teams to ensure sites are efficiently identified and recruited for study operations

  • Ensure the network is developed and maintained in accordance with company and regulatory standards regarding quality, compliance and privacy

  • Innovative, creative and strategic thinker with ability to work purposefully to hit corporate and team goals

  • Find new ways to provide value to our HCO Network partners

  • Member of DRN LeadershipTeam

  • Primary interface for the Growth Office with responsibility for training the growth organization to articulate. the DRN value proposition and conduct opportunity discovery with target study sponsors

  • Develop an efficient means of sourcing new opportunities, creating and pricing proposals, and proving ROI to win opportunities

  • Work with Optum Corporate Development ot explore partnerships and acquisitions that could assist in further developing the Netword

  • Report to management on issues and risk mitigation paths

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced company environment with minimal day-to-day direction and able to adjust workload based upon changing priorities

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Minimum 8 years experience in at least one of the following:

  • clinical research in a biopharmaceutical company, Contract Reserach Organization or at a HCO site;

  • healthcare business development/sales to large hospitals/integrated deliver systems;

  • business development/sales of clinical services and/or clinical technology products;

  • managing relationships with biopharmaceutical companies and/or HCOs at VP to C-suite level;

  • Experience delivering results with strong attention to detail and organization skills

  • experience communicating with a variety of stakeholders through a variety of media

  • Travel up to 25 - 50% - travel would be 1-2 day trip for face to face business development meetings, after COVID restrictions are lifted

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in health related field or business

  • Understanding of drug/device development

  • Understanding of healthcare provider research recruitment processes

  • Understanding of the clinical research industry

  • Experience mentoring colleagues and building a strong team culture

  • Experience working productively in a pressured environment

  • Excellent customer management and communication skills
