Penn Foster Vertical Business Manager in Boston, Massachusetts

Position Summary:

The Product Manager / Business Manager role at Penn Foster is a high visibility role responsible for leading one of our vertical product lines. You will help us build a more effective online career training experience for middle skills workers. You will have broad autonomy curate a roadmap, working with partners across the org to make decisions about projects to pursue. Partner with analysts, user experience designers, engineers and other business leaders to design new solutions that add value for our learners in measurable and scalable ways.

Within your vertical product line, you will be directly responsible for improving business & learner outcomes. Your work will be instrumental in the evolution of Penn Foster to become a leader in the space, bridging the skills gap between workers and employers. We will measure success based on the economic mobility and career advancement of our learners & graduates.

You will be an advocate for a test-and-learn approach to development, helping to instill a mindset of rapid improvement and outcomes-oriented work. And you will rely on evidence-based decision making and ruthless prioritization of work that adds value, clearly communicating strategy and major decisions across the organization to build a culture of trust and transparency with all stakeholders.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Tracks & develops understanding of trends in the market – competitors, employers, occupations and careers, skills and hiring criteria

  • Responsible for portfolio optimization decisions (including program and course level investments; partners with analysts and academic leaders on strategy and execution

  • Leads go-to-market strategy, including positioning, pricing, sales strategy, demand generation and more, in partnership with marketing and enterprise teams

  • Responsible for maintaining / curating product wishlist and backlog of program-specific improvements; partners with product and UX on learner experience enhancements

  • Partners across market research, product and analytics on user research to identify learner needs and pain points

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Experience: Ideal candidates will have 5-7 years of business experience, with preference shown to candidates who have experience as key decision makers in product, marketing, and strategy within education, workforce training & development, or a digital consumer products company.


  • Ability to deeply empathize with and understand of our learners

  • Setting a high bar for accountability and quality, putting the learner and their experience first in everything

  • Strategic planning and vision setting for the organization as it relates to your vertical

  • Clear, consistent communication of objectives and vision to inspire and organize efforts cross-functionally

  • Lead with humility & curiosity, and seek continuous improvement through experimentation

  • Translate market / user research and feedback into business objectives

  • Ruthless prioritization of high-impact initiatives, with ability to influence priorities and work output across functions

  • Transparent and effective decision-making informed by data, partnering with stakeholders across functions
