Alexion Pharmaceuticals Sr Manager, Strategic Evaluation in Boston, Massachusetts

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Leads the scientific evaluation process for new acquisition, alliance, collaboration or licensing deals for a portfolio of projects. Accountable for the following:

  • Identifies, investigates, analyzes, and forms third-party relationships that create mutually beneficial business partnerships.

  • Assesses aims and hypotheses, preliminary data, research plans and expected outcomes to triage issues and qualify opportunities in alignment with Alexion’s scientific and business objectives.

  • Applies scientific rigor to identify and assess issues that may impact the direction of the pipeline; weighs the potential and risks of each opportunity, and using multiple methods of analysis, makes recommendations on opportunities to pursue.

  • Serves as the project leader throughout the evaluation process, manages and tracks the data room, ensures appropriate protocols and disclosures; directs cross-functional teams on the completion of activities to support the information gathering, financial modeling, business evaluation and forecasting necessary to support the scientific evaluation of each scenario.

  • Leverages clinical and scientific research papers and evidence to assess and frame business cases for qualified opportunities.

  • Collaborates with partners in Commercial, Research & Development and Global Operations to ensure alignment of activities and business needs.

  • Presents findings and recommendations to senior leadership team, building rationale and consensus with the team.

  • Works closely with the Transaction, legal, finance analysis teams to ensure relevant deals of highest priority are being advanced and executed.

  • Presents business case for deals to senior leadership and is responsible for representing Alexion to external parties such as investment bankers, and stock exchanges.

Drives the identification of external business opportunities based on Alexion’s business strategy and search parameter and priorities. Accountable for the following:

  • Builds strong relationships within the academic, industry associations, pharmaceutical and biotechnology communities to bring awareness of the company’s interests and capabilities.

  • Represents Alexion at industry and academic conventions and conferences.

Contributes to building Alexion’s business development infrastructure and capabilities. Accountable for the following:

  • As a member of the business development team, established best practices and identifies opportunities for continuous improvements of processes and methodologies.

Accountable for:

  • Identification and qualification of opportunities.

  • Project management of a portfolio of potential business development activities.

  • Evaluation of scenarios across a range of transaction models including acquisition, licensing and collaboration partnerships.

  • Business case representations with key stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a scientific field.

  • Nephrology or Neurology experience.

  • 3-5 years of research and development experience within a related field or equivalent combination of education and biotech/pharma experience in a Business Development role.

  • Demonstrated excellence in scientific evaluation.

  • Strong project management skills to ensure integration of multiple work streams, to manage data flow and confidentiality to ensure completion of rigorous evaluation within established timeframes.

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

  • Strong presentation skills to deliver recommendations and frame business case consideration to senior stakeholders internally and externally.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated track record and ability to drive results as an effective a team member and project leader.

  • Must demonstrate an energy and enthusiasm which brings a positive approach to all challenges Sense of ethics and responsibility.

  • Ability to travel as required to meet business needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in business development and licensing, including a broad understanding of the financial, commercial and legal dimensions that support the evaluation process.

  • Strong relationship building / networking skills.

  • Excellent problem solving, organizational, and negotiating skills.
