Wolters Kluwer Senior Technology Product Manager in Boston, Massachusetts

Primary responsibilities:

The Sr. Technology Product Manager for our Indirect (sales and use) Tax products will lead scrum teams and provide direction and clarification to the Agile development team throughout projects.

Works closely with customers to understand their needs and test concepts and solutions. Engages internal stakeholders including sales, marketing, implementation, training and support teams to gather customer insights and their functional needs. Brings the voice of customers and internal stakeholders to UX and development teams to get solutions developed and delivered to market. Uses knowledge of best practices and the ability to solve complex problems. Skilled in the art of negotiation and ability to move a project forward.

This position will focus on various features, functionality and modules with our cloud-based tax platform solution, and bring new features and products to market.

  • Ensure the Agile Teams always have an adequate amount of prepared user stories and tasks to work on. This includes user stories for all new functionality for grooming and design sessions, ensuring that new functionality meets the acceptance criteria so the work can be designated as complete. The TPM will be expected to have basic technical and analytical skills as well as understanding the fundamentals of the tax and regulatory industry.

  • Plan and prioritizes product feature backlog and development for the product. They set the iteration themes and participate in Team Planning meetings. The TPM is available to provide advice, clarification, and guidance during the execution of each Sprint and champions sufficient customer engagement during the development through, for example, product demonstration and customer feedback. The TPM inspects, accepts or rejects completed work from the development Sprint

  • Work with the Associate Director to understand the product vision, roadmap, and growth opportunities near term and long term for the product portfolio they support. This includes understanding target customer segment(s) success criteria and goals, etc.

  • Manage Product Backlog is constantly prioritized to secure delivery of maximum business value. This includes making rapid tactical development decisions if they impact functionality or usability. Additionally, they monitor the progress of development and adjust based on larger strategic objectives.

  • Work in relevant structures (e.g. Scrum of Scrums) to manage dependencies and set priorities across multiple teams and Backlog items and to maintain alignment to the Product vision and roadmap. The TPM has final sign-off of the Product Release at the different levels.

  • Determine the relative business value of the backlog items, and uses necessary inputs such as customer priorities, competitive and industry research and the need to address technical debt. The resultant Product Backlog is aligned with various stakeholders.

  • Product Knowledge - Becomes a subject matter expert in the relevant product domains. It is expected that the TPM will quickly become an expert in the product from a feature / functionality perspective and will be able to proficiently demonstrate product functionality while articulating the value to clients.

  • Market Knowledge – Develops an understanding of target market and user base and uses this to guide product decisions. Spends appropriate time in the field speaking with customers, non-customers, and evaluators to observe their use of the product.

  • Product Presentations - Acts as product champion and presents designs and releases work to the sales teams, marketing teams, training & support personnel and select lead user customers.

  • The TPM Facilitates customer interactions, in partnership with user experience team, to understand their unmet needs and test concepts and solutions throughout the development process.

  • Voice of the Customer: The TPM represents the voice of customers and internal stakeholders to user experience and development teams throughout the solution development process and takes an outside-in approach leveraging customer interaction, industry trends, and competitive intelligence as a foundation for product direction and decision making

  • Financial – The TPM is responsible for understanding and delivering on ROI, for the projects they are working on and the Product Component they are supporting.

  • Stakeholders – The TPM facilitates quarterly development planning process (e.g., agile big room planning). Plans for the year, to ensure that the development team will have the written technical features and stories on time and prioritize development of those appropriately along with other user stories for the upcoming five quarters. Socializes progress and seeks inputs throughout the development process from all stakeholders, including, product line managers, marketing, sales, implementation, training, and support teams.

Job Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required ; Master’s degree a plus.

  • Scrum Product Owner certification (CSPO) or other Agile certification highly preferred but not required.

  • Pragmatic Marketing or 280 Group training for product management preferred.


  • Minimum 5 years of experience in product management for software products or equivalent experience

  • Three or more years with Agile Scrum methodologies as a product owner/technical product manager preferred

  • Three or more years in product management of B2B enterprise SaaS software products preferred

  • Three or more years in software solution development for Tax and accounting industry or professional experience in CPA firm preferred.

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications:

  • Articulate clear product vision aligned to the overall strategy

  • Experience driving all aspects of the software development lifecycle with development teams - iteration themes, backlog grooming, story mapping, user story creation and decomposition, retrospectives, etc.

  • Experience leading customer interviews, concept testing and usability testing

  • Comfortable influencing teams to align with product strategy

  • Time and project management

  • Translating business requirements into technical requirements and defining acceptance criteria for functional and non-functional requirements

  • Negotiation

  • Breaking down complex ideas into simple concepts

  • Serve as expert on current state of the product with relevant metrics, benchmarks, and usage data

  • Define product roadmaps

  • Analyze and develop new market opportunities

Travel Requirements: Up to 10%


Target salary range for New York: $87,200 - $121,950
