Foley & Lardner LLP Senior Manager of Business Development & Marketing (Intellectual Property) in Boston, Massachusetts
The Senior Manager of Business Development & Marketing will serve as the primary business development and marketing lead for the firm’s Intellectual Property Department. This individual will work closely with practice group leaders and other key attorneys in IP counseling and prosecution, IP litigation, and technology transactions and outsourcing practices on strategy, planning, and execution of business development and marketing initiatives. This individual will play an integral role in driving practice growth initiatives, client targeting, attorney coaching, and will help raise the profile of the department through a Sector approach and the firm as a whole. This position will work closely with our business development, communications, research, and events teams to develop, deliver, and measure results of campaigns and programs with the practice.
Contribute significant advice, actionable insights, and meaningful market analysis to the development and implementation of the practice groups’ strategies and business plans
Work with practice group chairs and key partners to develop, plan, and implement business development and marketing plans, strategic initiatives, events/programs, and targeted pitches that support business growth
Support attorneys in their targeted business development efforts, including lead generation to identify prospective clients, cross-selling to expand existing client relationships, and coaching on related business development and marketing activities
Contribute to and lead writing projects which may include customized content for pitches and RFPs, marketing materials, presentations, event invitations, thought leadership, and other internal/external marketing communications
Understand and support the pitch process, including competitive intelligence and research, to ensure strong intra-practice and industry group communication and client service opportunities
Monitor and report pursuits via the firm’s CRM to provide analysis showing the group’s activity to win new business
Serve as a client account manager for key accounts
Conduct client feedback session on a regular basis; ensure that client feedback is documented, communicated, and acted upon by the client teams
Leverage marketing technology to identify leads and track and manage opportunities and pursuits
Assist with the integration of lateral partners and counsel
Conceptualize sophisticated services and communicate their benefit effectively and simply to clients in writing and orally
Oversee the creation and regular updating of pitch materials, brochures, practice group descriptions, website content, deal and experience lists, and other marketing collateral, with a focus on value and client benefit
Work with the communications and PR team to build profiles for the practice groups (internally and externally) by securing media opportunities, developing thought leadership pieces, and publicizing news items, events, articles, and client matters as appropriate
Produce and manage seminars, receptions, webinars, and other marketing-oriented events and activities in coordination with the events marketing team
Evaluate sponsorships and opportunities to participate in various directories, and manage those we engage in to ensure the firm receives the maximum return on its investment
Provide coaching, individually or in a group context, to attorneys to help them develop new business, expand existing relationships, and drive their market demand
Guide attorneys on how to effectively communicate unique value propositions that differentiate Foley & Lardner
Collaborate with Business Development & Marketing Department colleagues to deliver relevant Business Development training
Create and maintain a library of best practices to be used systemically throughout the organization
Directly supervise two Business Development & Marketing team members, and collaborate, mentor, and lead to ensure a high-performing and results-oriented team in support of the Intellectual Property Department
Build trusted and productive relationships with attorneys and colleagues to develop and execute practice group plans and initiatives
Recommend, direct, and support traditional marketing activities that position the practice groups and firm to win work from desired clients
Provide discipline and structure to advance projects and plans to desired outcomes
Incorporate Return on Investment (ROI) mentality in all business development activities and expenditures; evaluate investments and make recommendations with respect to new and existing programs
Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration or related field required
Minimum of ten (10) years of related business development and/or marketing experience including revenue growth and client relationship management experience, practice group strategy and management experience, large client/account management cross-selling experience
Prior law firm experience required
