Alexion Pharmaceuticals Senior Director, Head of Internal Communications Center of Excellence in Boston, Massachusetts
This position can be remote/virtual, based anywhere in the United States and may require up to 15% travel to existing Alexion sites
Reporting to the Executive Director, Global Internal Communications, the Senior Director, Head of Internal Communications Center of Excellence will work cross-functionally with colleagues to develop and deliver strategic communication plans. This is a role requiring a high-energy professional with exceptional organizational and management skills. The Senior Director is responsible for executing internal communication tactics, including the distribution, measurement and reporting efforts across all channels, and management of the Internal Communications Center of Excellence. This leader will also serve as project manager for special communications projects, point person in crisis communication, and trusted delegate. This role is a strategic advisor, always listening to different audiences, using learnings to evolve our efforts and progressive thinking to continuously make our content more compelling and engaging.
A natural coach, this leader will mentor and manage a team of writers, videographers and channel managers. Adaptability and creativity will help turn complex topics into understandable messaging and promote a sense of storytelling aligned with company initiatives and ambitions.
The Senior Director will create strategic communications campaigns, come up with innovative ways to engage employees, write communications, presentations and talking points. This leader will partner with and coach members of our executive committee and senior leaders teams on communications to their teams and to all employees while developing relationships throughout the organization. Collaboration with internal partners as needed across functions (External Communications, Legal, etc.) and global offices will be key.
The role requires an individual who can think creatively, act strategically and has the ability and executive experience to motivate and influence across all levels of the global Alexion organization. This leader in this role will be a strong representative of global communication capability, able to both give strong communication recommendations and also be a strong partner and creator.
It will be important for this leader to understand the biopharma landscape and to help “bring the outside in” to provide context around Alexion’s key business and people priorities at any given time.

Lead the development and execution of strategic, organization-wide, high-profile integrated communications plans/campaigns/initiatives designed to connect colleagues to Alexion’s strategy, vision, priorities, and culture.
Advise and influence senior executives and functional leaders on strategic communications messaging, channels, and delivery style; provide input into key strategic initiatives for functions, departments and large sites.
Manage and mentor the Communications Center of Excellence to build capabilities for growth.
Manage agency, and related vendors to ensure value-for-money – including development of budget and budget priorities for the team.
Develop and define key messages and ensure clear and consistent delivery.
Step into a crisis and quickly turn around clear and thoughtful communications.
Evolve our internal communications infrastructure as we continue to move to a more digital engagement model. Understanding business and employee needs and developing the right tools and channels to support engagement, awareness and collaboration at all levels.
Manage and provide strategic vision for the internal comms team, ensuring alignment and cohesion among written communications and events.
Leverage data / sentiment to help guide our communication strategy, effectiveness and reach, and link to employee engagement and listening feedback.
Build strong relationships with key stakeholders and regional leads, define their communication requirements, and provide them with strategic advice and counsel.
Work across the business to elevate the purpose and role of strategic communications and engagement across the organization building strong partnerships and serving as a trusted advisor for senior business leaders.
Support large-scale change initiatives including organizational redesign, technology implementations and process optimization.
Aligning the communication teams to a strategic editorial calendar, roadmap and drive measurable outcomes that are coordinated with the global communications plan.
Cultivating a team culture of trust, engagement and development where ideas are heard, and everyone is included.
Working with senior executives and team members with the creativity and skills to activate our leaders to discover and share important and inspiring narratives.
Finding the “yes” in the “no” while implementing a prioritized messaging approach so colleagues understand what’s most important.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished communications professional with a minimum of 15 years of experience in communications or a related field. The ideal candidate embodies these attributes and possesses these skills:
Significant experience as an internal communications expert with strong presentation skills and a demonstrated ability to provide counsel to senior leaders in addition to strong individual communication skills.
Experience working closely in a senior capacity with executives in a public company.
An effective communicator with the proven ability to collaborate across business lines and regions in a matrix organization.
Experience leading high-performing teams during times of both stability and change.
Experience with HR, business, and change management communications to employees at multiple levels.
Excellent writing skills and strong attention to detail. Able to simplify complex topics into relatable narrative.
Ability to act as both exceptional individual contributor and the ability to lead cross functional teams, often which do not directly report to the role.
Experience working in the biotech/pharma industry, with a thorough understanding of complexities that come with operating in a global pharmaceuticals organization.
Demonstrated success in driving employee engagement and communications programs that energize employees and build company pride.
Experience in successfully developing and managing live events.
Strong project management and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
Able to independently structure and manage workflow and priorities, under tight timelines and with competing priorities.
