State of Massachusetts Seasonal Landscape Architect Assistant in Boston, Massachusetts

The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, skating rinks, and parkways. To support recreation facility enhancement, natural systems, and visitor experience, the Bureau of Design & Project Management manages an annual program through its Landscape Improvements Contract, for landscape planting and maintenance, site furnishing installation and repair, removal of old items, and other small site improvements projects, such as herbicide treatment of invasive species, and parkland renovations/ deferred maintenance. This position may include review and tagging of plant material at nursery sources and will entail review of plant material quality. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Long-term Seasonal Landscape Architecture Assistant to enable D & PM to properly manage the Contract and ensure quality. The Long-term Seasonal Landscape Assistant tasks include: * Coordination with contractors to confirm and review scopes of work prior to start of work * Field observation of the work * Monitoring of contract budget expenditures * Monitoring of project schedules * Reporting on any contract work problems * Providing weekly reports on work accomplished through the program * Other related duties as required Qualifications: * Knowledge of plant materials and proper planting practices * Experience in field work related to landscape planting and other site work * Ability to work well with others, communicate regularly to supervisor * Ability to manage project budgets * Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Preferred Qualifications: * Undergraduate degree in landscape architecture, horticulture, plant ecology, or related field * Experience in plant selection and creating planting plans * Project management experience * Ability to work independently and efficiently * Willingness to spend a good portion of time in the field * Ability to update and edit DCR’s GIS-based recreation facilities inventory Other: Must have current and valid driver’s license. Position Information: Start Date: April 11. 2021 End Date: October 30, 2021 Please note, if you are selected for this position and will be working less than 90 days, the position will automatically revert to a short-term position. Our short-term positions are not part of the salary scale that is advertised within this job posting. Should this position revert to a short-term seasonal position (less than 90 days), your salary rate will be discussed with you during the interview phase of the process. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the development, implementation and/or evaluation of landscape design and/or landscape architecture work of which (B) at least two years must have been in a professional capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's degree in landscape design or landscape architecture may be substituted for two years of the required (A) experience.* II. A Graduate degree in landscape design or landscape architecture may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required(B) experience.
