Boston University REPORTER, WBUR Program & Production in BOSTON, Massachusetts

The health and science reporter will cover the world-renowned medical, research and biotech communities of Greater Boston. Reporting will include groundbreaking biomedical labs, new and emerging health science and health trends, personal health and mental health. The health and science reporter will also be responsible for hosting WBUR's CommonHealth newsletter, developing a unique voice and relationship with readers. The reporter should have a passion for multimedia storytelling and a demonstrated ability to report from the perspective of patients and their families, researchers and medical providers. The position requires that you develop subject-matter expertise, break news and cultivate strong sources. The reporter is responsible for identifying important trends in health care, determining the quality and news value of research, and collecting and verifying information. Candidates should have proven experience building audience and stoking community engagement.

Essential Functions:

  • Reports and produces several audio and digital feature stories each month, in addition to spots and short posts, focusing on biomedical research, health and health care. Independently judges news stories for appropriateness and publication. Breaks news. Completely executes multimedia stories.

  • Writes about the latest health and science news for the weekly CommonHealth newsletter and curates coverage in an informal, conversational style.

  • Consistently and enthusiastically engages with readers and the WBUR community on social media and community venues such as public forums and events. Manages the CommonHealth social media accounts.

  • Develops and pitches ideas for stories, initiatives and projects related to health and science coverage. Provides ongoing insight to other WBUR reporters, shows and departments about health and science coverage.

  • Stays abreast of the latest developments in health and biomedical research, develops sources and tracks trends in the region.

Required Skills

Bachelor's degree or relevant experience required.

At least three years of related work experience required.

Extensive on-the-job experience and a proven track record of breaking news, reporting nuanced features and producing journalism that has an impact.
