Living Proof is seeking a creative and self-motivated Product Development Chemist III to lead the formulation development of innovative hair products. The role will be responsible for developing new hair care and styling products, improving existing formulations, and ensuring industry leading product performance. This position will work on cross-functional teams, inclusive of marketing, regulatory, and supply chain departments, to bring innovative and effective hair care solutions to the market. This is a full-time position based in Boston, MA, and will report to the Associate Director of Product Development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and formulate new hair & scalp care products, including shampoos, conditioners, treatments, and styling products.

  • Work with other Product Development team members to improve and optimize existing formulations as needed.

  • Lead technical efforts to ensure new formulas align to project brief objectives, adhere to prescribed timelines, and fall within required cost targets.

  • Troubleshoot product stability and preservative efficacy issues and work with Product Development team to recommend action steps.

  • Collaborate with Product Insight team to qualify prototype performance, product usage and establish claims support plan.

  • Keep current with the prestige competitive hair care market, new product launches, and competitor formulation and effectiveness.

  • Share and present program updates and technical information within a cross-functional project team setting, both internally and externally.

  • Engage in brainstorming sessions and help fuel the innovation process by creating prototypes for new product concepts.

  • Work together with Regulatory Affairs to verify adherence to safety regulations, compliance requirements, and industry standards.

  • Support tech transfer to manufacturing facilities for scale-up and production, including identifying and generating appropriate product specifications.

  • Build and manage relationships with raw material vendors, contract manufacturers and external technical consultants.

  • Continuously enhance formulation knowledge and skills by attending industry trade shows and seminars.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and emerging ingredients in the hair care industry.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, or related science.

  • Minimum of 5 years of personal care formulating experience required. Hair care development highly preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of formulating a variety of product formats, including surfactant systems, emulsions, solutions, and serums. Aerosol experience a plus.

  • An enthusiasm for crafting new and cutting-edge products, experimenting with unique raw materials, and applying a creative perspective to formula development.

  • Experience in leading or assisting in tech transfer, scale-up, and full-scale production batches.

  • Experience with leading multiple projects in parallel and problem-solving through challenges.

  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively on cross-functional teams.

  • Exhibit excellent organization, planning, and multi-tasking skills.

  • Must have strong interpersonal, written/verbal, and presentation skills.
