Wayfair Operations Manager - Consumer Product, Design & Analytics in Boston, Massachusetts

Wayfair believes everyone deserves a home they love, and that furnishing your home should be a source of fun, not anxiety.

At Wayfair we build tech products for millions of consumers (our websites and Apps) as well as for our suppliers, our field agents, and our employees. The teams that build these technologies comprise product managers, designers, analysts, engineers, operations/business managers, and more -- thousands of people working together to scale our rapidly growing business from all angles.

We’re bringing on a new member of our operations team to focus on 1) our longstanding consumer-facing technology team (called “Storefront”), and 2) the newly launched global communities that bring together and support designers, product managers, and analysts on teams across Wayfair.

Storefront

Storefront plays a crucial role in making Wayfair’s vision a reality by building all consumer-facing websites and Apps across all Wayfair retail brands and geographies. Now 700-strong, we’re committed to creating a world-class customer experience at scale, and to creating a culture in which our teams thrive and feel fulfilled.

We’re tackling a wide array of fascinating, incredibly difficult problems -- like helping a massive, swiftly growing global customer base efficiently find the perfect products from our catalog of >10M items (with the majority of traffic on mobile), architecting our technology platform to unlock efficiency and scalability, and creating content-driven, tailored experiences for every Wayfair brand and user. We have a modern tech stack including sophisticated capabilities around AI, data science, multivariate testing, and personalization. And we’re a highly collaborative, supportive team that values learning, psychological safety, and intentional career development.

Global Communities (Experience Design, Product Management, Analytics)

Our recently formed Global Communities are organizations that will help us elevate and harmonize the craft, processes, systems, and culture for specific non-engineering tech disciplines. Starting with Experience Design, we’re standing up these communities to drive cohesive end-user experiences, to create strong connective tissue across Wayfair departments, and to provide cultural connectedness and consistent career development opportunities to each designer (or product manager, or analyst) -- no matter where they sit in the org.

The Role

We’re looking for an Operations Manager with an interest in tech product development and general management -- a curious, driven, and adaptable person who’s eager to learn how large organizations work and dive in to solve a variety of complex problems. As a member of the Operations team led by the Storefront Chief of Staff and working closely with our Vice President of Product, Design and Analytics, this role will work closely with senior leaders across Wayfair on both the tech and business sides of the company. You will play a crucial role in helping Storefront thrive by ensuring we remain a well-oiled machine as we scale. And you will be instrumental in designing and launching our new global communities and setting them up for success.

While we have some flexibility in terms of specific focus areas, and the right leader will come up with their own sense of where to lean in to create impact, key responsibilities will include:

Serving as a strategic thought partner to the Storefront leadership team and to the Global Heads of Design, Product, and Analytics - Form and share your perspectives on how we can improve on a wide variety of topics (e.g., operating model, team culture, cross-department collaboration, transparency). Help us identify blindspots, surface new opportunities, and remain aware of issues affecting team productivity and/or morale.

Driving implementation of strategic cross-cutting initiatives - Ensure alignment around, transparency into, and crisp execution follow-through for cross-department initiatives (e.g., biannual planning and roadmapping, codifying and spreading standards best practices, onboarding new hires, cross-department resource planning, etc.).

Helping us communicate clearly to internal and external audiences - Hone, articulate, and craft the messaging around the department’s vision, strategy, impact, learnings, and roadmap. Figure out and refine over time the most effective channels, media, emphasis, and tone for each key audience. Produce and coordinate large all-hands meetings and leadership meetings, creating and shaping strategic communications hands-on. Write weekly newsletters read by thousands. Design processes to efficiently generate quality content as we scale.

Stewarding our culture and empowering leaders and teams to detect and resolve cultural issues - Discern where we can improve our culture (broadly, and on specific teams) by analyzing existing data sources and thinking through the best ways to collect data and assess team health going forward. Work with leadership to contextualize your findings and build action plans to address pressing needs. Lead strategic initiatives aimed at solving cross-functional cultural issues. Design and lead team-building activities and spread best practices across the org. You form strong partnerships with Wayfair’s Talent and Diversity departments and leverage the resources they offer.

Guiding our teams’ career development and partnering with leadership to ensure fair, productive, tailored performance evaluation and people management - Make sure managers are aligned on performance expectations (for each discipline) and that these expectations are communicated clearly to employees. Empower managers to coach and create ongoing growth opportunities for their reports. Partner with Wayfair’s Talent department to adapt the performance review processes to the needs of specific functional areas. Implement the performance review process for some teams.

Making sure our teams are always learning - Set the learning agenda for our teams, identify what resources we should provide, and help develop content when needed. Look for opportunities to scale learning resources across teams. Leverage the expertise of Wayfair’s Learning & Development department.

Deepening our ties with the tech community outside of Wayfair - Engage with the broader tech community outside of Wayfair, both to strengthen Wayfair’s brand as a top tech employer and to enrich the ecosystems in which we operate. Includes partnership strategy, potentially producing a tentpole annual event, and employer brand content creation, among other activities.

Superpowers we’re seeking

Crisp comms - you craft clear, compelling, polished messaging that resonates with a wide variety of audiences, in a wide variety of formats (e.g., slide presentations, email and newsletters, instant messages (to individuals as well as large groups), prose memos, workshops/meetings etc).

Systems thinking - You develop a broad and deep understanding of Storefront, and of the global communities and their stakeholders. To make decisions and recommendations, you consider how these systems produce business impact through world-class tech products and highly motivated, fulfilled, bonded employees. You continually find ways to make the systems more effective, efficient, resilient, and scalable.

Process wizardry - you manage complex cross-functional processes and initiatives precisely, efficiently, and crisply, with a bias for action.

Relationship building - throughout your career you’ve built trust-based relationships with people with a wide variety of personality types, seniority levels, and functional disciplines.

Results delivery - you have proven experience developing a strategy and driving results across teams in an ambiguous environment while leveraging data from a multitude of sources to tell a story and impact the overarching strategy.

Strategic thinking - you can think both creatively/abstractly, and analytically/quantitatively. You’re as comfortable hopping up to a whiteboard to break down a problem in a group meeting as you are drawing insights from raw data.

Entrepreneurship - you develop your own ideas of how to be most effective for the broader business. You help us identify new opportunities to work better, smarter, faster or all three.

Time management - you excel at balancing your time across a wide range of activities and prioritizing the most impactful work. You’re able to plan out and structure work in a timeline that’s reasonable for you and your colleagues. You can rally a team around an important deadline, but you also know when it makes sense to pivot.

Winning approach - you’re an excellent listener, confidant, and collaborator. You’re likeable, engaging, humble, perceptive, and constantly seeking to learn. You’re innately curious. You’re intrinsically motivated, energetic, resourceful, resilient, comfortable with ambiguity, intellectually (and in all other ways) honest, curious, not afraid to speak your mind, and ambitious.
