Here and Now is NPR's midday, national news magazine program produced at WBUR in Boston. The Managing Editor- Planning coordinates booking and futures planning for the daily program paying attention to news and current events and suggesting ideas for segments. The Managing Editor- Planning works with hosts, editors, producers to assign and schedule news stories, cultural events, books, magazines, films and music keeping in mind the interests and needs of a diverse audience. The Managing Editor Planning will maintain a calendar of events and anniversaries, working with the Here and Now management team to conceive, plan and execute coverage of such events and anniversaries. The Managing Editor Planning maintains a database of ideas and tracks follow-up and assignments, coordinates a booking strategy, guiding producers in terms of best guests, focus and frame for interviews. With the Executive Producer and the Here and Now management team, the Managing Editor Planning will help to develop and implement the overarching vision of Here and Now and manage personnel and budgetary issues related to the program.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates futures planning. This person will follow national and international news closely and suggest ideas for coverage. Follows cultural events: books, movies, magazines, music, theater and suggest lines of coverage. Works with hosts and producers to research ideas for segments and series. Keeps track of events and anniversaries with important news and cultural significance. Works with producers and editors to prepare host copy and questions. Oversees edits of interviews as assigned. Determines producer assignments paying close attention to details to avoid scheduling conflicts and over capacity.

  • Participates in daily editorial meetings, as well as planning meetings in collaboration with NPR. Advises Here and Now senior team about NPR network-wide events and series and manages planning and scheduling. Listens to interviews as assigned and suggests appropriate edits and lengths. Manages planning for host and producer field reporting and live events.

  • Maintains relationships with editors and producers of WBUR newsroom, paying attention to station produced stories, features, series and podcasts that are appropriate for H&N. Provide written and verbal editorial feedback to staff regularly, including annual performance reviews.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or relevant experience required.

  • Minimum of seven years journalism with at least two years in broadcasting and working in a newsroom.

  • Proven ability to manage several deadlines simultaneously; ability to identify and develop stories for a news magazine with a diverse audience; knowledge of a wide range of topics from news to culture to entertainment, with an awareness of developing trends.

  • Must be familiar with audio editing software.
