The Managing Development Editor is a member of the National Geographic Learning ELT product development team. This position oversees the development and successful launch of ELT programs for both print and digital delivery. The position involves managing, collaborating with, and supporting the professional development of in-house editors; managing authors, editors, and other external partners; project management, including scheduling and budget tracking; planning and conducting both quantitative and qualitative research among current and potential customers; conceptualizing, analyzing, preparing, reviewing, editing and writing content; content quality assurance; and creating/implementing product enhancement strategies.
This position is accountable for the entire lifecycle of assigned products, and participates in creating product strategy by developing hypotheses, evaluating data, analyzing market and competitive trends, testing ideas in the market, iterating, and ultimately making product decisions based on evidence and insights. While keeping in alignment with business priorities, this position works with the Publisher and Executive Editor to take customer needs from concept to launch, focusing on timely delivery, comprehensive product quality, and an effective learning experience.

What You’ll Do Here:
Displays people management skills that develop talent, motivate and engage staff, and successfully leads staff to meet performance and development goals
Deploys project management skills to plan, prioritize, resource, and runs multiple projects with complex interdependencies
Builds relationships, influence partners, and empower teams to creatively develop differentiated features by developing or contributing to research plans, product briefs, stakeholder updates, author and editor guidelines, and more
Applies and understanding of market segmentation and product differentiation to develop products that exceed customer expectations
Manages all stages of the product development lifecycle of all or major program components for flagship projects by setting clear objectives and timelines; creating, implementing, and managing detailed project schedules with interdependencies for entire product array; and allocating and managing project resources in order to release a product to market on time and within scope
Hires and manages internal direct reports, external writers, editors, and other partners, and supervise in-house staff on the project as needed to bring projects to completion within specified deadlines and budgets
Trains and mentors staff on editorial skills and processes Engage in problem-solving throughout the entire produce development lifecycle
Engages key sales and marketing partners during product planning and development to ensure strong sales launches and to help shape the go-to-market product strategy
Engages key accounts during research and development in order to improve the product and facilitate increased adoptions and sales
Travels to schools and/or engage with customers virtually to help close business, research needs, and test product assumptions
Drives brand, content design principles, and sound language pedagogy in all products
Performs other duties as needed to meet department and company goals
Skills You Will Need Here:
BS or BA degree or equivalent; MA in TESOL, English, or Education preferred
ESL/ELT teaching experience preferred
Minimum of 6 years of textbook publishing experience
Proven expertise in publishing ESL/ELT content
Effective communication and collaboration skills that demonstrate proactive listening, adjusting message for audience, handling conflict, and influencing across teams
Strong project management skills, including the ability to oversee multiple projects and tasks, meet established deadlines and budget parameters, and allocate and lead resourcing across projects
People management experience preferred
Understanding of market and customer research best practices
Self-discipline with a high degree of accountability and personal urgency
Natural curiosity and willingness to learn paired with a desire for continuous improvement
Demonstrated writing and verbal presentation skills enabling you to prepare and present information and recommendations to a diverse and often senior audience
Must be eager to learn, highly motivated, and team-oriented
Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks and meet established deadlines
