State of Massachusetts Manager of Strategic Health Communications Design and Integration in Boston, Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking an experienced health communications professional to support the Bureau of Community Health and Prevention (BCHAP). In this role, the Manager of Strategic Health Communications Design and Integration provides leadership in the development and implementation of communications strategies across the bureau. This position helps BCHAP programs to infuse communications strategies grounded in behavior change objectives to advance bureau policy priorities and programmatic goals across a wide range of topic areas, including tobacco, obesity, cancer and chronic disease prevention, violence and injury prevention, sexual and domestic violence, adolescent and school-based health, and sexual and reproductive health. The Manager of Strategic Health Communications Design and Integration works across the Bureau to ensure consistency and clarity of message. In addition, s/he provides leadership, strategic direction, and matrixed supervision to eight staff across the Bureau engaged in the day-to-day aspects of health communication activities. BCHAP acknowledges the history and persistence of structural racism in the United States and its impact on health. The Manager of Strategic Health Communications Design and Integration will provide leadership and coordination to program staff within the bureau to help frame and message this work. The qualified candidate will possess not only the professional and managerial experience to lead health communications efforts, but also the interpersonal and communication skills needed to support staff across the bureau in providing high quality, effective and efficient services. The Manager of Strategic Health Communications Design and Integration assures that all communication strategies are aligned with DPH and EOHHS priorities and adhere to DPH policies and procedures. The Manager of Strategic Health Communications Design and Integration has responsibility to ensure Department policy around communications including health communications and marketing campaigns are followed. *Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and are not all inclusive):* /Communication Strategy Development & Implementation */ * Ability to assess, prioritize, design, implement and improve comprehensive health communication strategy across a broad spectrum of content areas. * Foster creative message planning to leverage and integrate messages. * Proven record of success in project development and management. * Ability to provide strategic direction and convene staff from across Bureau programs to advance communications projects. /Leadership & Collaboration/ * Exceptional leadership and communication skills with experience establishing strong working relationships and strategic partnerships with diverse internal and external constituents, stakeholders, and groups. /Staff Development & Capacity Building/ * Demonstrated ability in supporting staff development and capacity building, including employee coaching/training/development. * Ability to synthesize communications strategies and goals for program staff that do not have a communications background. * Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. */Health//Equity/ * General understanding of and commitment to health equity, including racial equity, and addressing social determinants of health. * Ability to provide leadership to change policies and systems to address health inequities and racial justice and ensure the inclusion of a social determinants of health framework. *Preferred Qualifications:* * Four years relevant work experience in health communications or related field (at least 3 years in a supervisory or management capacity). * Master’s level training in health communications, public health, public policy, health assessment or a related field. * At least 3 years of experience directing the planning, implementation, coordination, administration, monitoring and evaluation of health communications strategy or initiative, with full responsibility for managing staff, resources and activities. * Knowledge and experience developing health communications for several of the following public health areas: tobacco prevention and cessation, diabetes, hypertension, cancer prevention, asthma, worksite wellness, community health workers, obesity prevention, healthy communities. * Demonstrated experience managing diverse staff. * Strong understanding of social determinants of health and a commitment to health equity, particularly racial equity. _About the Department of Public Health:_ The mission of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is to prevent illness, injury, and premature death, to assure access to high quality public health and health care services, and to promote wellness and health equity for all people in the Commonwealth.
