State of Massachusetts Legislative Director – Office of Senator Patrick O’Connor in Boston, Massachusetts

SUMMARY: The Legislative Director (LD) is a senior member of the Senator’s team and serves as advisor and manager for the Senator’s legislative agenda. The LD advises the Senator on all legislative areas and implements the legislative agenda. This position assists in the development of policy positions and is responsible for all legislative initiatives. The LD is the office point person on all legislative matters including, but not limited to: bills filed and co-sponsored by the Senator, legislation before the Senate, and legislative concerns from constituents. The LD leads the development of policy positions and oversees all legislative initiatives on behalf of the Senator. The LD reports to the Chief of Staff. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Works to formulate positions on legislative issues; * Research policy issues and draft legislation, amendments, and committee testimony; * Monitors legislative activity on the Senate floor and handles long-term and short-term legislative planning for the Senator; * Respond to legislative-related inquiries and communications from constituents, organizations, legislators, and other stakeholders; * Oversees the progression of bills with which the Senator is involved; * Recommends strategies and tactics on all legislative matters; * Ensures that the Senator is able to conduct committee work in a timely and informed manner; * Monitors activity of Senator’s legislative caucuses; * Meets with groups of constituents or other office visitors as necessary; * Maintains up-to-date status knowledge on all legislation affecting the district, legislation on which the Senator is a principal sponsor, or legislation on which the Senator is a cosponsor; * Monitors and reports on floor action to the Senator and the Chief of Staff; * Coordinates responses to all legislative correspondence; * Maintains a good working relationship with the Senator, staff and constituents; * Meets deadlines as set by the Senator, Chief of Staff, and legislative calendar; * Meets attendance requirements as established by the office; • Brief the Senator on key issues prior to meetings, caucuses, and Senate sessions; * Reviews weekly and daily advances; * Daily monitor assigned towns for constituent activities, town events and government meetings; * Act as point of contact for assigned towns on all matters related to town events; local issues and municipal projects; * Supervise or participate in the hiring of an office intern; * Provide staff member coverage at public events; and * Performs other duties and projects as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree and at least one year of relevant work experience. Legislative experience at the State House, and/or other legislative experience is beneficial. * Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, positive, and professional manner. * Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively and professionally in a dynamic work environment. * Ability to produce quality work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment. * Ability to maintain a flexible schedule including working extended hours, possibly on nights and weekends. * Thorough knowledge of legislative process and of Senate organization and procedures. * Experience and competence working with social media platforms and computerized office applications, including graphic design platforms like Canva and Wordpress. * Knowledge of office policies, practices, and procedures. * Well-organized and self-motivated. * Knowledge of the Plymouth & Norfolk District is a plus.
