State of Massachusetts Intern - Social Media & Strategic Communications in Boston, Massachusetts

TheDepartment of Public Utilities (DPU)is responsible foroversight of investor-owned electric power, natural gas, and water utilities in the Commonwealth; developing alternatives to traditional regulation; monitoring service quality; regulating safety in the transportation and gas pipeline areas; and for certain aspects associated with the siting of energy facilities. The mission of the Department is to ensure that utility consumers are provided with the most reliable service at the lowest possible cost; to protect the public safety from transportation and gas pipeline related accidents; and to ensure that residential ratepayers' rights are protected. The DPUseeksto promote safety, security, reliability of service, affordability, equity, and greenhouse gas emission reductions. The Department of Public Utilitiesseeksadynamic, self-starter toassistin communications and public affairs efforts.The social media and strategic communications intern will work alongside theDirectorof Communicationsto develop and implement communication plans, manage social media, andassistin mission critical tasks which supports the goals of the Department. The work of thesocial media and communications Intern will help to informDPUstaff about keyongoing effortsof theDepartment, raise awareness about the work ofDPU to the public, andmaintainrecords of communications outreach and media requests. Example projects Include planning, writing, and managing social media content; capture data to use in public reports; managing graphic and video design campaigns;assistingwith press events; and more. This internship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects ofcommunications planning(including managing press inquiries)at a government agency. Duties and Responsibilities TheSocialMediaandCommunicationsIntern will perform administrative duties including: * Assistwithdistributingdaily news clips. * Assistin the development of social media content and graphics that are engaging and informative. * Monitor all social media platforms for trending news, ideas, and feedback. * Assistin implementing plans to increase public awareness and engagement on the work of the Department. * Assistin the development ofDPU’s internalnewsletter. * Assistin drafting media advisories, press releases and other related content. * Maintain records and logs of media coverage and requests, as well as outreach activities of the office. * Assistin the development of collateral materials. * Take photos and/or video of events and meetings. * Assistin the development of contentforDPU’swebsite. * Assistthe Director of Communications onother activities and duties as assigned. * * Minimum Qualifications The successful candidate willpossessand/ordemonstrate: * Strong analytical,writtenand oral communication, and organizational skills, with attention to detail. * Working knowledge of social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), with a willingness to propose creative new ways to use these mediums. * Proficiencywith Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Access, and Excel. * Ability to gather relevant information from trusted andaccuratesources. * Ability to multitaskandeffectively manage concurrent projects and communication streams. * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. * Ability to work independently and as part of ateam. * * Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated experience andexpertisein the following areas will also be important considerations: * Awareness of the role of communications staff in a government office. * Knowledge of the work oftheDepartment. * Experience with photo editing and graphic design software, such as Canva and Adobe InDesign. * Knowledge and experience in the field of public relations, marketing, communications, or digital communication. * * * Details * * Hours: 37.5/wk * Salary: $21/hour * Location: DPU offers a hybrid work environment.
