Summary

Responsible for leading Santander's business development efforts in the Government sector throughout Boston area targeting larger scale Government clients (i.e., States, Counties and public entities with annual revenue of $75MM and greater). Responsible for growth and retention of existing client relationships. As central contact for clients, Government Bankers/relationship managers coordinate product specialists including Cash Management, Treasury, Retail, Leasing and Santander Universities to provide the full breadth of Santander's products and services to clients and prospects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Orchestrate cross-sell opportunities with business partners to offer full breadth of Santander products and services including Cash Management and Credit

  • Generate new profitable relationships within the Government Banking market segment, with particular focus on mid-sized to large public entities (large municipalities, regional school districts, counties & county colleges & agencies) located within territory

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the Government market including Governmental policies that impact doing business (e.g., state collateral requirements)

  • Identify evaluate, structure and document commercial credit transactions to ensure maximum profitability with reasonable risk

  • Monitor credit quality within assigned portfolios and takes action as appropriate

  • Interface with the investment banking community on commercial business transactions

  • Mentor less experienced Government Banking Relationship Manager(s) in region

  • Participate in team meetings and proactively offer suggestions on improving team performance including industry and specialty best practices

  • Represent Santander Bank by actively participating in industry/trade associations and events and developing referral sources

  • Work with internal and external partners including Treasury, Treasury Operations, Legal, Compliance, Credit and Audit to ensure conformity with internal and external policies pertaining to work with Government clients

Qualifications

  • 12-15 years of commercial banking experience with increasing levels of responsibility and demonstrated outside sales success or equivalent experience in public sector

  • Established network and referral sources in Government Banking sector at State and higher end client level

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or equivalent experience

  • Extensive knowledge of commercial banking products and services both credit and non credit

  • Superior sales, presentation, interpersonal, negotiation and written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong creative solution and problem solving skills

  • Ability to mentor and develop a team

  • Ability to work independently and leverage professional relationships within and outside the bank

  • Full utilization of sales automation tools and related technologies

  • Superior knowledge of financial analysis, risk evaluation, loan documentation and commercial loan collection activities
