Position Summary

The Global Insights and Analytics Lead at the Associate Director level informs and influences Alexion global strategy and commercialization by enabling high-quality, evidence-based decision making through market research and analysis. The GIAL is a key role which integrates critical insights from global primary and secondary market research/data to deliver actionable recommendations and drive strategic decisions for both the US and global affiliates. The GIAL works across functions to answer global and regional business questions, profiles business trends, influences R&D and clinical programs, guides asset strategy, and contributes to promotional and marketing content and resource development. This individual interacts with the US, Europe, Japan, Australia/Canada, and Latin America teams.

Job Duties, Scope & Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities

  • Designs, leads, and executes qualitative and quantitative primary market research projects to address key business questions related to commercial products and/or pipeline assets. Understands business needs and designs a project, including methodology and vendor selection, to provide answers and actionable information to key stakeholders. Leads others to deliver on key projects, while functioning as the subject matter expert on research methodology, project approach, and deliverables required.

  • Executes projects in a timely manner and within budget. Begins market research process by sourcing appropriate vendors, leading the RFP process, and negotiating to deliver the best work at appropriate cost to Alexion. Maintains ongoing communication with vendors throughout the research process and keeps Alexion stakeholders informed on progress. Presents results and strategic insights, and responsible for analytics of primary and secondary data sets to extract country and region-specific insights to identify issues and trends to better inform decision-making and strategy development.

  • Demonstrates technical proficiency with a range of primary research methodologies and secondary data analyses techniques. Understands and triangulates primary market research with disease area literature and other operational data to identify inconsistencies and uncover integrated predictive and prescriptive insights.

  • Serves as the “voice of the customer” to the assigned Therapeutic Area Team(s) and translates "customer/stakeholder learning" into actionable recommendations. Facilitates, challenges, and leads discussions with cross-functional teams regarding implications and relevant recommendations based on those insights generated from primary and secondary research and other analyses. Present materials, defends insights, and makes recommendations to executive management teams.

  • Acts as an internal knowledge expert and strategic business partner, working collaboratively with respective teams(s) as well as other cross-company and cross-functional partners. Manages complexity, thinks analytically, and allocates time effectively between multiple priorities or therapeutic areas.

  • Responds to ad hoc requests for key commercial and business insights, delivering material in a succinct and effective manner to fulfill communication needs with internal and external stakeholders with diligent accuracy.

  • Innovates in market research and analytics using varied techniques and approaches to build enhanced value for commercial partners

  • Executes all work in an appropriate and compliant manner consistent with the values of the organization, working with internal teams to define and revise procedures and policies as needed.

  • Skills & Experience

  • Experience conducting primary and secondary market research in the biopharma industry with HCPs, patients and payers in multiple countries preferred.

  • Track record of strategic and critical thinking abilities and business acumen.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and integrate marketing and science across multiple disease states to be effective. Experienced with clinical data interpretation as well as competitive intelligence.

  • Ability to listen to and interpret data, synthesizes data into an understandable narrative, and effectively communicates findings to stakeholders. Anticipates key questions and prepares answers in advance.

  • Ability to assess data from primary and secondary research to mine additional insights.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of statistics and SPSS.

  • Expertise using Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Reporting

  • I nforms and recommends critical business direction reflective of the needs of the customer, patient, & healthcare professional uncovered with insights from research.

  • Delivers insights to align with therapeutic areas goals and objectives on deadline.

  • Presents clear, concise summary reports or dashboards to senior regional leads and executive teams with recommended actions to modify trends and ensure launch excellence and business growth in light of future competitive market scenarios.

  • Probes beyond the descriptive insights provided in top-line reports from primary market research to uncover diagnostic insights that explain the ‘why’ behind the reported results.

  • Influences forecasting and strategic and/or tactical planning initiatives with commercial insights derived from triangulation of primary and secondary sources.

  • Managing Internal & External Resources

  • Manages the market research budget and timelines assigned.

  • Initiates RFPs with multiple vendors and management of vendor selection process.

  • Uses internal & external secondary data sources to conduct appropriate analyses.

  • Reviews and assesses market research agencies and data suppliers. This encompasses a variety of agencies such as primary research, secondary data, and forecasting services.

  • Drafts statement of work documentation to support engagement with healthcare practitioners and patients, and internal compliance and legal review processes.

  • Manages vendor interactions to ensure results & insights meet mission critical timelines.

  • Partnering & Communication

  • Develops strong partnerships with cross-functional teams – marketing, medical, sales, business analytics, commercial operations and new products groups.

  • Ensures relevant team members are engaged at key stages of project to ensure that critical business questions are adequately addressed.

  • Serves as a resource and mentor to guide and/or challenge activities outside assigned scope of work.

  • Leverages partnerships with regional affiliates to identify best practices in market research and shares these with global affiliates.

  • Participates and contributes to corporate initiatives beyond assigned responsibilities.

  • Remains flexible as work responsibilities change based on business needs.

    Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in life science and/or business / marketing

  • 8 years of experience in market research and analytics in healthcare, research /consulting firm, or pharmaceutical/biotech company

  • Fluency in English, both written and oral, are mandatory requirements; Excellent communication and presentation skills to all levels in the organization.

  • Ability to travel >25% of time

  • Credible thinking and performance that earns the respect of R&D, Commercial and Executive management teams.

  • Ability to lead projects independently and modify vendor’s methodology as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in science and/or MBA/PhD degree – marketing, market research, statistics.

  • Experience with specialty and/or orphan/rare disease therapies.

  • Experience in hematology, neurology & metabolic diseases.

  • Experience in a global role.

  • Fluency in other languages a plus.

  • Analytics and forecasting skills.

  • Commercial Analytics and ROI tracking for Marketing programs.

  • Combination of pre-launch, launch and post-launch experience.
