Alexion Pharmaceuticals Executive Director, Therapeutic Area Medical Lead Hematology/Nephrology in Boston, Massachusetts
Position Summary
The Executive Director will support the US Vice President in providing strategic planning and leadership to all in-country Medical Affairs team activities for Alexion’s Hematology and Nephrology franchises and Alexion marketed products within each of these therapeutic areas.
Principal Responsibilities
The Executive Director will advance the understanding of the medical landscape in relation to the Hematology and Nephrology disease areas, treatment and support the development and implementation of appropriate strategies within the country aligned with the Global Medical Affairs strategy for the franchise. These activities include, but are not limited to, development of medical strategy, leading the Medical Science Liaison teams, Regional MSL Directors, and the Medical Directors. Support life cycle management data generation, publications, scientific exchange, advisory boards, medical insights, and thought leader development.
Define the country Medical Strategic and Tactical plans and implementation with respected Medical Directors
Deliver and execute local Medical Strategic and Tactical plans Plan aligned with Global Medical Strategic and Tactical plans
Partner with BUL in the commercial organization to ensure Strategic plans alignment
Define resource needs, and manage budget planning and resource allocation across both disease areas
Support U.S. Medical Directors in leading monthly and quarterly reviews of US medical affairs activities, including field medical activities
Support the Medical Directors to ensure timely Country Publication Planning and Communication activities in supportive of Global and Country Medical Affairs Strategy
Support the team to identify and implement appropriate high-impact medical research projects to support the strategic objectives, including Alexion–sponsored and investigator-initiated projects.
Strategic collaboration with HEOR on data gaps needs for each disease area
Collaborate with the Global Medical Education team to localize (and develop as needed) medical content for scientific exchange by field medical team
Provide appropriate and timely medical affairs support to key commercial and reimbursement activities aligned with strategic priorities
As needed, assist Medical Directors with review and approve promotional materials to ensure information is accurate, relevant to the Country environment, and ensure medical accuracy
Ensure effective team communication, performance and documentation of medical affairs activities and knowledge through the application of suitable reporting systems and structures
Define Plan of action based on Strategic plans for Field medical teams
Identifying training needs in collaboration with key stakeholders and ensure implementation of medical training programs for the field medical team as well as other cross-functional members as appropriate
Collaborate with the Medical Operations to help manage the in country Medical Operations needs and ensuring the activities are prioritized to meet the business needs. (Insights reporting, training, budget, etc.
Collaborate with the Clinical Operations to manage the in country Clinical Operations Lead role and ensuring their activities are prioritized to meet the clinical operations and country objectives
Qualifications
Minimum of 12+ years in Medical Affairs
Minimum of 10+ years in leading and managing teams, Medical Affairs teams preferred
Product lifecycle management experience preferred
Orphan diseases knowledge/experience preferred but not required
Hematology, Nephrology, Critical care experience preferred but not required
Demonstrated ability to create and lead successful cross-functional teams in changing, competitive environments
Demonstrated ability to influence important customers, challenge common perceptions and implement medical affairs tools to improve patient care and outcomes
Good analytical skills as applied to medical, scientific and technical information
Demonstrated ability to accurately and effectively evaluate medical/scientific literature and develop effective medical strategies and communication strategies
Demonstrated experience in early and late clinical development
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both local language and in English

Education
- Medical degree (M.D.) preferred, Pharm D or Ph D
