Boston Globe Media Partners Editorial Writer in Boston, Massachusetts
The Boston Globe opinion section is looking to hire an editorial writer to cover a range of issues, including but not limited to immigration, politics, and criminal justice. The writer would be a member of the Globe's editorial board, which meets almost daily to discuss issues in the news, to frame ideas for editorials and, during campaign season, to interview and endorse candidates. We are looking for a curious, open-minded journalist with strong reporting skills and the ability to write swiftly, elegantly and with voice.
This editorial writer would closely follow the latest news, controversies, innovations and debates relating to their areas of coverage. They will be expected to take the lead in proposing and writing unsigned editorials on those topics. But the writer will also have the freedom to develop bylined essays and pursue longer-term reported projects. We will also encourage them to be active participants in all editorial board discussions, regardless of the issue.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate strong skills in reporting, researching, and writing. Some knowledge of audio, video or data reporting will be beneficial.
Beyond those skills, we expect all members of the editorial board to be open-minded to different points of view; curious about a wide range of subjects; willing to question conventional wisdom and maintain some level of critical distance from their subjects. Perhaps most important, we expect board members to be able to debate difficult subjects vigorously but also amicably with their colleagues. We are a small but diverse group where team work and collegiality are essential. A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment is necessary.
This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild
