HarperCollins Publishers Editorial Assistant in Boston, Massachusetts

Overview

If so, good news:HarperCollins Children’s Books is seeking an Editorial Assistant to provide administrative and editorial support to two executive editors at Clarion Books, an imprint in the Children’s division. The Editorial Assistant will support managers on a range of titles, from picture books to young adult fiction and non-fiction, by award-winning and bestselling authors such as Sy Montgomery, Deborah Underwood, Juana Martinez-Neal, Don Brown, Robin LaFevers, Allen Say, Karina Yan Glaser, Joyce Sidman, Jacqueline Davies, Melissa Sweet, Francisco Jimenez and Lois Lowry.

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative and editorial support, including scheduling meetings, processing expense reports, booking travel, and managing department workflow for the team.

  • Drafts copy for individual titles, including title sheets, flap copy, selling copy, and catalog copy (i.e. Launch prep).

  • Attends meetings with and acts as liaison to other internal departments (i.e. Publicity, Marketing, Managing Editorial, Production, etc.).

  • Maintains and updates author files and records and assists with contractual payments.

  • Reads and evaluates manuscript submissions, and assists with preparation of acquisitions materials, including conducting sales research, creating P&Ls, Acquisitions Memos, and drafting contract requests.

  • Helps coordinate the backlist initiatives. At the managers’ discretion, oversees select backlist projects such as the production of paperback reprints, including drafting copy, routing mechanicals, and being the key editor for the paperback edition.

Qualifications

  • 4 year college degree or equivalent work experience

  • Prior relevant work experience (including but not limited to internships and/or coursework)

  • Must have a passion for children’s books and keen interest in learning about the marketplace

  • Proven ability to set priorities under pressure and multi-task; must be highly organized and detail-oriented

  • Must be highly creative; writing experience preferred

  • Must communicate ideas and opinions clearly and effectively, both in person and in writing

  • Must be efficient, self-motivated, and have excellent communication skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, and Power Point

This role is currently based out of Boston. You will need to commute to the office when it reopens.
