Alexion Pharmaceuticals Director, Scientific Communications in Boston, Massachusetts
The Director, Scientific Communications, leads the successful development and implementation of the global communications strategy, publications plan and medical education initiatives for the assigned therapeutic area franchise in alignment with Alexion brand and corporate strategies. The Director chairs the Global Publication Team and engages with cross-functional partners including research, medical, marketing, medical affairs and biostats. Develops collaborative and productive relationships with external investigators, thought leaders and authors. Oversees the timely execution of the publication plan leading to high quality and impactful scientific and clinical abstracts, posters, oral presentations, manuscripts and slide decks. Analyzes and interprets scientific and clinical data; reviews deliverables from direct reports and agencies for content and key messages as required. Identifies and supervises consultants and medical communication agencies.
Lead creation of the global communications strategy and publication plan for the therapeutic area franchise in accordance with the existing global brand strategies
Serve as Chair of Global Publication Team for assigned product(s) and indication(s)
Supervise timely execution of the publication plan to produce high quality, accurate and impactful deliverables including abstracts, posters, oral presentations, manuscripts and slide decks
Plan, develop and implement educational plan, and other scientific programs that communicate important information to the medical and scientific community. Also to include collaboration and involvement in scientific symposia.
Establish strong collaborative relationships and work in close partnership with other members of GMA (VP, Outcomes Research, Med Info, MSLs) and key stakeholders internally (product teams, clinical teams, biostats) and externally (e.g., opinion leaders, patient advocacy groups, professional societies)
Review publications, slide presentations and other scientific materials for content and positioning
Identify, screen, manage and supervise medical communications agency and manage all financial and contractual aspects of assigned projects
Participate in training and ensure compliance with Alexion Publication Policy
Advanced degree: PhD, PharmD, or MD
7-10 years of relevant experience in a Pharmaceutical company or Medical Communications agency
Strong experience in strategic publication planning (including scientific platforms), tactical publication planning and implementation, and the planning and development of medical educational materials
Ability to interpret and organize highly complex scientific data, including experience reviewing clinical trial data and output from statistical analysis programs
Must be skilled writer with demonstrated ability to write / review / edit / place scientific articles, abstracts, posters
Strong working knowledge of current good publication practices and guidelines
Demonstrated experience in having a leadership role in designing scientific communications strategy and programs in alignment with corporate strategies.
Understanding of the clinical development process, especially clinical study and global health outcome data.
Ability to lead teams, including medical publications agencies, to plan, write and develop abstracts, posters, oral presentations, manuscripts, slide decks and content for scientific and educational programs
Experience in working closely with KOLs and authors
Demonstrated leadership skills
Background in hematology, nephrology, or neurology
Ability to travel (US and International) as necessary
PhD in Life Science
Experience in planning and implementation of symposia and development medical education materials
CMPP / AMWA certification desired
