The Research and Development (R&D) Program Managers are core members of the Asset Teams, Development and Lifecycle Management teams, and ORD due diligence teams at our Company. Program Managers drive these cross-functional teams to deliver projects and products that improve human health and business.
The Director - Program Management partners with functional leaders to develop strategies, plan and execute our Company's drug development and in-line portfolio. When supporting due diligence, Program Management partners with functional leaders to a ensure an integrated overall risk assessment with mitigation options, as well as development plans with appropriate scenarios, and estimates of resources and costs. Projects may be internal or part of alliance agreements with external research and development partners. The Director is expected to provide project management leadership and to drive teams, with sufficient influence, project management mastery, and knowledge of drug development to take on challenging assignments with minimal guidance.
The Director may manage cross-functional, cross-divisional, and/or alliance governance committees and are expected to contribute to ongoing business process improvement and talent development.
Reports to Executive Director, Strategy and Program Management.
Resources Managed (budget and Full Time Equivalents (FTEs).
This role may have direct reports.
- Works in a matrixed environment across all functional areas within R&D and across the enterprise.
Independently and/or leading outsource partners in managing projects in any phase of development (early development, late development, lifecycle management) in any therapeutic area, including molecular entities and therapeutics of any modality (small molecule, biologics, combination products, devices, digital, etc.). Projects range in priority, pace, and complexity, and may include one or more alliance partners.
Guiding teams through creation, management approval, execution, and termination/closeout of integrated project plans appropriate to the phase of development and complexity of the project. Harmonizing input from diverse disciplines (e.g., clinical, regulatory, access, supply, commercial, and other areas) into a cohesive and cogent project plan.
Leading teams through scenario planning to determine optimal development strategy for pipeline or due diligence assets
Contributing, synthesizing, and articulating program strategy to senior management and translating it into execution within the project team and/or communicating the ORD position to key stakeholders during due diligence
Collaborating effectively with functional areas, support functions, and alliance partner functions (if applicable) to drive project delivery.
Ensuring communications within and from the team are clear and effective, meetings have clear purpose and objectives, and that conflict is surfaced and resolved.
Leveraging relationships and networks to improve and enhance team dynamics. Proactively identifying and removing obstacles to drive business results.
Providing our Company's organizational and process expertise to teams to enable navigation of discovery, development, and corporate governance and business needs.
Ensuring adherence to project management standards, enabling sound decision making. Includes ensuring project schedules and risk management plans are fully developed and updated, governance contracts are adhered to, change control procedures are followed, enterprise databases reflect accurate project data, and data quality is maintained.
Partnering with Finance to ensure resources/budgets are planned and managed. Communicating project status/issues and documents/presentations for senior management/governance committees/alliance committees. Managing strategic, cross-functional or cross-divisional management, governance, or alliance committees.
Providing mentoring, coaching, and oversight to outsourced project managers working on common projects. Sharing lessons learned and best practices to positively impact the community.
Actively participating and completing ongoing training and personal development activities to increase leadership competency and to gain knowledge and skill in the discipline of project management and the business and science of pharmaceutical product discovery and development.
Chairs timely, efficient, and action-oriented Project Team meetings and is responsible for coordinating highly complex team operations and communications.
Directs highly complex project communications and ensures that all project customers are fully informed and knowledgeable of project activities and their status.
Provides leadership to the team and functional areas to anticipate and identify complex project issues which pose a challenge to achieving strategic goals; proposes and implements plans to resolve such issues and execute corrective actions.
Education Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required; concentration in a scientific or applied discipline strongly preferred.
Required Experience and Skills:
At least 10 years of biopharmaceutical/ drug development experience
At least 5 years experience in a Program/Project Management role within Research and Development/ Business Development with knowledge of early- late phase development, drugs and/or devices, and/or experience managing due diligence reviews within Research and Development.
Experience simultaneously managing multiple pharmaceutical development programs with varying levels of complexity.
Must have working understanding of the drug development process
Must have a working understanding of and application of principles, concepts, practices, and standards of pharmaceutical project management.
Demonstrated leadership and ethics; demonstrated ability to hold others accountable for delivery.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting, including demonstrated ability in building and managing teams, committees, taskforces etc.
Strong collaboration and problem-solving skills; able to establish good working relationships with employees at all levels, resolve conflict and provide feedback, and to devise and implement creative solutions to problems.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written; demonstrated ability to speak up appropriately and to raise issues to teams and senior management.
Ability to manage through complexity and ambiguity along with competing priorities.
Must have attention to detail and a proven track record to be able to think critically, strategically, independently and problem solve.
Must have high level of motivation, drive, and demonstration of Organon leadership values.

Preferred Experience and Skills:
Advanced degree (e.g., MS, MBA, PhD, PharmD) preferred.
Experience leading the work of outsource partners strongly preferred.
Project management certification (PMP) and/or formal coursework/training in project management strongly preferred.
Experience with due diligence process and/or BD.
