Description:Suffolk University invites qualified candidates to apply for a Director of Summa Leadership Giving Program. Suffolk University’s Summa giving program, which is comprised of Annual Gift fundraising at the $1,000 to $50,000 level, is critical to advancing the university’s mission. For the successful candidate, the opportunity exists to rejuvenate the Summa program. The Summa program develops and implements comprehensive fundraising strategies for the engagement, acquisition, stewardship, retention and upgrading of donations from individuals. Summa level gifts serve as a vital source of revenue and as an incubator for major donor prospects who will move through the pipeline and later make major gifts. Support of Suffolk at the Summa level from alumni, parents and others is crucial to increasing the pool of unrestricted dollars available to the university. In addition to generating flexible revenue, the Director will identify major and planned giving prospects.Primary/Principal Responsibilities:The Director of Summa Program will work in concert with Major Gift Officers, Annual Giving, Alumni Relations, and Stewardship to build a program that creates an identity and commitment to Summa leadership gifts to Suffolk University. This position will identify and secure philanthropic support for the University ($1,000 to $50,000) and steward donor loyalty societies. This position will also provide oversight of the giving society program goals, strategy and recognition efforts as well as secure leadership level giving through the support of Reunion classes celebrating reunion.Personal Fundraising:

  • Maintain a prospect portfolio and conduct 75 personal solicitation visits annually.

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward current and potential Summa donors to achieve increased gifts.

  • Secure 25 new or lapsed Summa level gifts

  • Secure 25 Summa gift renewals

  • Engage prospects and donors to support Suffolk and cultivate long-term philanthropic partnerships with them and the University, working closely with volunteers, the faculty, deans, and the administration.

  • Assist major gift officers with increasing the Annual Fund giving levels of major gift prospects

  • Regularly solicit Summa level gifts to ensure goals are met.

Summa Leadership Giving Society Program Management:

  • Develop, oversee and market the Summa Leadership Giving Societies of Suffolk.

  • Determine and oversee Summa level gift stewardship programs.

  • Oversee Summa quarterly newsletter.

  • In partnership with Major Gift Officers, Annual Giving and Alumni Relations staff, identify, recruit and steward volunteer leaders and committee members to develop strong committees focused on fundraising.

  • Participate in professional activities to raise Suffolk’s visibility in the profession and to stay current with trends in the field.

  • Participate as an active member of the university community by attending regular campus meetings and events (athletic events and student performances, Academic Awards, Convocation, and Commencement). Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail as it relates to managing solicitation reports shared with volunteers, the creation of written solicitation strategies with volunteers, accomplishing projects and tasks in the prescribed time frame, and keeping colleagues engaged and informed as needed concerning program strategies.

Summa Program Strategic Development

  • Plan, coordinate, supervise and implement the various volunteer activities to reach fundraising goals and objectives for reunion classes and alumni board giving committees, and ensure these committees reach their full potential.

  • Build, implement and manage a volunteer program to expand giving society membership at all leadership levels.

  • Develop and oversee volunteer giving and reunion giving committees, including individual goal setting for each committee, and facilitate peer-to-peer solicitations. This includes: evaluation of giving patterns and establishing goals; providing input on broad-based components of campaign effort; identification, recruitment, training and support of campaign volunteers, analysis and evaluation of various campaign efforts, and personal solicitations.

  • Analyze and set giving society goals for the program overall, along with membership giving from alumni, parents and friends.

  • Identify and brand Summa level gift benefits.

  • Plan and implement giving society events such as Summa receptions, working in tandem with the Alumni Relations team.

  • Help plan and implement a volunteer recognition program in collaboration with Alumni Relations team, including a possible reception during Reunion Weekend, to recognize volunteers and leadership donors.

  • Collaborate with other University offices to meet Suffolk’s fundraising objectives.


  • BA degree required.

  • Demonstrate significant experience of at least 5 years in development or a related field

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with, lead, and train a diverse team of volunteers to reach fundraising goals, and work independently and as part of a team.

  • Willingness and ability to work independently with a variety of prospects, donors, and volunteers.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Superior organizational skills.

  • Detail oriented.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to travel and work weekends and evenings, as assigned.
