What we're looking for:

You are experienced with all types of internal and external communications vehicles, easily crafts business-specific messages and have created and implemented internal change management programs. This position will use deep experience to design internal communications programs that support business leadership, informs employees to enable in-role success, and crafts compelling stories to share with internal and external audiences to raise awareness of a function’s and/or team’s great work. While primarily an internal communications role, this person may be asked to create communications for external audiences including communications from across the organization to attract competitive talent and educate media, investors and customers about Cengage.

The right person is willing to always test and try new ways of communicating or working as a means to deliver the most effective communications on behalf of the business they are aligned to, their senior team, and the organization at-large.

What you'll do:

Build a strong partnership with business leaders to craft an integrated corporate communications strategy for a broad, enterprise-wide systems modernization and process-change effort; you will be responsible for building the program and leading execution. You will design, manage, and implement a variety of communications activities that include, but are not limited to:

  • Change Management & Strategic Planning – Partner with senior leadership, program management and other colleagues and third parties to understand the goals and objectives of a broad enterprise-wide systems modernization and process change effort. With this understanding, you will segment audiences within the organization and develop communications programs for each audience to ensure objectives for the overall program are achieved. Ultimately, the program you design will increase understanding and awareness of the operational, behavioral, and technological changes needed to ensure a successful program.

  • Internal Communications – You will build internal executive communications programs in support of broad change management initiatives, focused on operations and technology. The program will inform employees, influence them to support the changes, and create connections between their work and the organization’s investment in growing and scaling our technology, globally. The internal communications program will be tailored to the specific needs of the change initiative, aligned to key measures of success for the program as defined by you and agreed upon with your manager and Executive Team sponsor(s).

  • Measurement – You will outline measurable goals that can be used to track the effectiveness of the employee and executive communications programs you design. Analysis should be ongoing throughout the lifespan of a program (pre-launch, execution, post-launch) and recommendations provided in real-time on how to continuously improve the efficacy of each program.

  • Relationship Management – You will develop and maintain strong partnerships with leadership of the businesses and functions to build credibility as a trusted partner, advisor, and strategic consultant. No ask is too big or too small as it relates to the build of the successful partnership and development of a successful internal communications change management program.

Preferred experience but not required:

  • In addition to deep experience designing and leading internal communications and organizational change initiatives, this role may be called upon, at times, to provide support or lead external communications, including: Executive Thought Leadership, events and speaking preparation, content creation for social media posts, third-party endorsements and/or testimonials, draft press releases, and key messages.

Skills You Will Need Here:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years related internal communications experience, including proven change management experience, from program strategy design through execution. Agency experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated success partnering across matrixed organization

  • Experience disseminating corporate messaging to a multitude of audiences

  • Experience using executive thought leadership to aid in company storytelling and establishing industry credibility

  • Articulate communicator with the experience and confidence to provide daily counsel to senior leaders

  • Experience with both strategic planning and tactical implementation of sophisticated communications program

  • Strong project management and organizational skills, and ability to prioritize w/record of leading competing demands

  • Excellent writing, editing and presentation building skills

  • Ability to work well with employees at all levels across the organization, and to thrive in a dynamic, energized environment

  • "Client service" mentality

  • Expertise in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, PowerPoint

  • Experience integrating internal and external communications programs to bolster effectiveness of message delivery across all platforms and relative audiences, preferred but not required.
