Alexion Pharmaceuticals Director, Competitive Intelligence & Analytics in Boston, Massachusetts
The Director of Competitive Intelligence & Analytics reports to the Head of Competitive Strategy & Market Insights and is responsible for building competitive intelligence that translates into actionable recommendations to help Alexion achieve our enterprise strategy.
Leads competitive intelligence and secondary analytics for the Global Marketing Complement Franchise, supporting the commercial franchises.
Identifies needs for competitive intelligence (e.g., product offerings, customer experience, marketing, technological capabilities, distribution strategy) and works with business units and functional teams to shape the scope, approach, resources and deliverables for research and associated recommendations. Ensures successful execution of roadmap.
Essential Job Functions
Regularly integrates findings into a holistic view of competitive position and delivers recommendations to business units, which in turn drives future decisions and informs future strategy.
Works collaboratively, as needed, with Global Marketing, Business Development and Clinical Development team to:
Conduct research of disruptive technologies/ companies with potential direct impact to the innovator industry
Identify and analyze new/clinical programs in existing, adjacent or new markets and businesses
Identifies competitive intelligence activities already in place across the enterprise and assesses gaps. Designs the future vision for sustainable competitive intelligence framework and develops a roadmap, including sources of competitive intelligence data and needed tools/technologies. Supports Business Units and functional teams to adopt the framework.
Maintains a pulse on competitive trends through independent research, conferences and trade shows, stakeholder partnership, etc. Develops actionable recommendations based on competitive actions or market developments through fact based analysis to support insights. Ensures output is visible (shared across enterprise) and is actionable, influencing decisions. Adjusts framework as needed with feedback from senior leadership.
Manages multiple complex work assignments and navigates obstacles to deliver the work product. Communicates recommendations to key stakeholders in a clear, concise and impactful way.
Accountable for the following:
Identifies, investigates, analyzes products, markets, and industry players in the complement space and monitors new data events, presentations and news releases.
Performs scientific assessment of data, mechanism of action, research plans from various sources and provides such assessment to team. Ability to identify key issues quickly.
Works with R&D and commercial to form views on threats and opportunities that other technologies and companies in the complement space may provide and advises senior management of these views.
Provides timely information on new developments and partners with functional experts to create quick assessment of the impact that these might have.
Attends industry presentations and events and stays current and knowledgeable about developments.
Leverages clinical and scientific research papers and evidence to assess and frame business cases for qualified opportunities.
Applies scientific rigor to identify and assess issues that may impact the direction of the pipeline and weighs the potential and risks of each opportunity
Collaborates with partners in Commercial, Complement Franchise, Business Development and Research & Development to support competitive intelligence needs.
Builds strong relationships within the academic and industry associations to get unique points of view that may have impact on opportunity/ risk assessment
Demonstrated excellence in scientific/competitive evaluation.
Demonstrated business acumen.
5-8 years of R&D/Analytics/ Commercial or BD experience within a related field or equivalent combination of education (Bachelor’s degree at minimum) and biotech/pharma experience.
Strong project management /tracking skills to monitor multiple assessments in short timeframe
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
Strong presentation skills to deliver recommendations and frame business case consideration to senior stakeholders internally and externally.
Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated track record and ability to drive results as an effective a team member and project leader.
Must demonstrate an energy and enthusiasm which brings a positive approach to all challenges.
Sense of ethics and responsibility.
Ability to travel as required to meet business needs.
Experience in competitive intelligence function or similar commercial/ business development function at a biotech or pharma organization
Strong collaboration, relationship building / networking skills.
