Merck Commercial Agility and Transformation Director (US-HH, Agile COE) in Boston, Massachusetts

Job Description

The US Human Health Division has undergone significant transformation over the past few years, driven by an effort to shape Our Company’s future by demonstrating new ways of working, commercial agility, enhancing our capabilities and being more adaptive and responsive to changing market needs.

The Commercial Agility and Transformation Director (US-Human Health, Agile Center of Excellence) role will be a member of the US Strategy and Commercial Model Innovation (S&CMI) department. S&CMI partners across the US enterprise with an explicit focus on cultural transformation, commercial agility, operating model effectiveness and innovation.

The Commercial Agility and Transformation Director (US-HH, Agile COE) will be responsible for enhancing commercial agility across the US Market, to ensure greater realization of customer and business value. This role provides talent with an opportunity to build an enterprise mindset, while working with amazing colleagues across the US Market’s Chronic Care, Hospital Specialty, Oncology and Vaccine business units. The ideal candidate is someone with strong commercial acumen, who comprehends Agile Ways of Working and can inspire meaningful change, to accelerate US commercial model transformation.

Primary Activities:

  • Commercial Agility Coaching and Enablement (70%)

  • Ability to guide senior leaders, key stakeholders and teams on how to use Agile strategies and practices to deliver outcomes that translate into commercial impact.

  • Act as a Commercial Agility coach to senior leaders and teams; often supporting Marketing Leaders, COEs and Scrum Masters.

  • Responsible for helping teams perform by instilling an Agile mindset and methodology through coaching, improving team processes and championing continuous improvement.

  • Advises stakeholders, prior to Agile team formation, on what Agile Roles and Practices are needed to accomplish work.

  • Facilitates and Coaches Agile events such as Quarter Business Reviews, Objectives and Key Results, Big Room Planning, Team Maturity assessments and Story Mapping.

  • Identifies the needs for CoPs and establish process to set up such CoPs.

  • Accelerates Agile Role and Agile Team Maturity

  • Support the execution of Transformational Priorities (30%)

  • Supports the Commercial Model Innovation Team across all phases of commercial model capability development (Define, Design, Detailed Design, Build, Pilot, Launch, and Realize)

  • Ability to influence change across both team and leadership levels through relationship building, collaboration and knowledge of change management


Education Minimum:

  • B.A./B.S.

  • M.A./M.S., preferred


  • 3+ years of Agile coaching or Commercial Agility experience with methods such as Scrum, Lean, or Kanban

  • One or more Agile certifications (e.g., CSM, CSPO, CSP, PSM, PSPO, ICP-ACC)

  • Ability to execute comprehensive transformational project management and change plans across a broad group of stakeholders/functions (HQ, field, COEs, strategic partners, executive sponsors, etc.)

  • Strong executive presence, facilitation and communication skills

  • Strong understanding of compliance-related concepts and application in all job-related functions


  • Commercial Model Innovation and Transformation experience

  • Brand Marketing experience

  • Experience with mentoring and training teams in various Agile methods (Scrum, Kanban, Lean) and can apply the appropriate one to the situation

  • Comfortable with Agile project management tools (Jira, Rally, VersionOne, Azure DevOps)

  • Knowledgeable in systems thinking, design thinking and organizational behavior

  • Experience in Launch Planning and Product Launches
