Boston Globe Media Partners Arts and Entertainment Editor in Boston, Massachusetts

Job Description:

The Boston Globe seeks a creative, energetic, experienced editor with a passion for and deep knowledge of arts and entertainment to join our Living/Arts editing team. You will direct our digital-first coverage of several beats, including music, TV, theater, and comedy, assigning everything from enterprise features to reviews and artist profiles, breaking news, and quick hits on what’s trending. The ideal candidate thrives in a culture of experimentation and fun and enjoys collaborating with critics, reporters, and other editors to produce coverage that informs, entertains, and engages readers both online and in print. You’ll ensure the Globe’s coverage of the beats you edit reflects the best of Greater Boston’s exciting and diverse culture scene, sheds light on the forces shaping the creative community and arts institutions, breaks important news first, and holds local institutions accountable. 

Responsibilities:

  • Closely following Boston’s arts scene, attending shows, reading widely, developing sources among arts leaders, seeking out scoops and fresh story ideas, and identifying trends

  • Developing creative ideas for special packages and sections, and working with the department’s digital editor to plan engagement strategies

  •  Supervising critics and reporters to develop the most compelling stories and angles and shape and polish their copy 

  • Seeking out and developing new freelance talent with diverse points of view

  • Assigning photos and working with the art department on design and illustration concepts

  • Writing web, SEO, and native headlines designed to capture the widest readership possible

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher and at least five years of post-college editing experience in arts and entertainment

  • The editing chops to guide, shape, and polish stories to meet Boston Globe standards

  • Organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities on tight deadlines

  • Excellent news judgment, along with a sense for the stories and angles that will grab readers and drive engagement

  • Subject matter expertise in the arts and entertainment; familiarity with the Boston arts scene a plus

  • A willingness to adapt and be audience-focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

    This full-time position is based in Boston, working out of our downtown offices three days a week and remotely for two days. The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. Candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.

    This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
