Alexion Pharmaceuticals Alliance Manager in Boston, Massachusetts

Position Summary

The Alliance Manager will support Alliance and Integration Management within Strategy & Business Development team. The selected individual will need to work seamlessly across functions and at multiple levels to maintain and track activities relating to partnerships that Alexion has built through BD to make sure that these are being executed for value creation. The individual work on challenging and high impact opportunities with a broad mandate, driving a variety of initiatives and projects related to corporate strategy, strategic planning, business operations and transformation.

Qualified candidates will be expected to appropriately sort and prioritize activities relating to alliances that Alexion has, understand scientific communications, communicate with the counterparty, understand financial metrics, maintain good relationships and anticipate any challenges that will then need to be managed cross-functionally to resolve. This role is multi-faceted and dynamic, requiring candidates to have a diversified skillset including strong leadership, the ability to effectively collaborate and engage in challenging conversations while maintaining a positive outcome. A candidate’s ability to manage such complex programs, motivate cross-functional teams of people who will not have direct reporting line, and be masters of both written and oral communication, is critical.

Principal Responsibilities

Alliance Management

  • Lead and develop alliance management for collaborations between Alexion and its partners, taking accountability for overall success of the collaborations in coordination with Program Management teams

  • Pilot integration or divestiture process for acquired/partnered/out-licensed programs and IP

  • Work closely with Corporate, R&D, Commercial and Manufacturing teams to understand and support key strategic goals relevant to business development activity

  • Anticipate and avert hurdles, track activities to ensure execution, and support consolidated

  • Support sound governance and professional best practices for alliance management


  • Contribute to business development life cylce during to understand upcoming deals, deal complexity and plan before deal closing all activities needed for integration

  • Work in tandem with internal and external teams to manage multiple workstreams for integration

  • Lead enterprise-wide cross-functional teams on a project-by-project basis to bring acquired asset packages into Alexion’s standard conduct of business operations


  • Alliance management experience spanning all stages of pharmaceutical development, with understanding of preclinical, clinical, manufacturing, regulatory and commercial aspects

  • Demonstrated track record in successful execution and management of strategic collaboration, in-licensing and out-licensing agreements; experience in other business transactions such as M&A transactions, joint ventures, co-promotion agreements preferred

  • Knowledge of enterprise partnering portfolio management

  • Demonstrated ability to positively interact and work in good intelligence with therapeutic and functional area leaders.

  • Thrives in a rapidly evolving environment, with ability to lead in parallel strategic and tactical tasks

  • Resourceful and creative

  • Very strong organizational skills, ability to manage various projects, deliverables at the same time

  • Strategic mindset, including the ability to prioritize tasks, identify the most relevant parameters driving a business decision and to focus the work accordingly

  • Strong analytical skills required to provide sound inputs into financial evaluations. Experience in financial modelling and analysis a plus

  • Strong business orientation and the ability to view issues from multiple functional perspectives, while managing organizational ambiguity


  • At least 2 years of professional experience as alliance mananger in the biopharmaceutical industry

  • Post graduate work in strategy, operations and transformation topics for pharmaceutical companies; or any project management function in regardless of industry industry


  • Advanced degree in allied field (PhD, MBA, MA, e.g.) or undergraduate degree from a premier institution with 5 or more years of relevant professional experience
