Your Role:

The Associate Director of Global Licensing & Business Development, Diagnostics and Biomarkers will support the external growth goals of the Merck KGaA organization by leading efforts for identifying, assessing and securing business development opportunities in for biomarker and diagnostic applications. The Associate Director is also expected to manage the Diagnostics and Biomarkers portfolio and to align and prioritize projects with the strategic goals of the R&D; and Commercial organizations. In addition, the Associate Director will support activities across the Global Business Development portfolio. The Associate Director of Global Licensing & Business Development, Diagnostics and Biomarkers will report to the head of Global Licensing & Business Development, Enabling Technologies.

Key Accountabilities

1) Lead the Biomarker and Diagnostics portfolio strategy and resourcing process

  • Identify business development opportunities that fit within the strategic goals of the TIPs and Franchises to deliver exploratory biomarkers, clinical trial diagnostic assays, and companion diagnostics in support of the Merck pipeline
  • Identify and track emerging trends within the scientific and technical fields of relevance
  • Work across functional lines and internal stakeholders to develop and refine strategic investments in biomarker and diagnostic platforms
  • Provide oversight of the project evaluation, approval, and resourcing process
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with external partners and business stakeholders
  • Represent the Biomarkers and Diagnostics group at relevant scientific and partnering conferences

2) Lead transactional activities in line with the Biomarkers and Diagnostics strategy and broader pipeline initiatives

  • Evaluate opportunities, participate in diligence processes, and negotiate agreements that support organizational needs
  • Support development of business cases and financial models with other internal functions (with key link to Controlling, IP, and Legal)
  • Support the preparation of presentations to governance bodies and relevant internal stakeholders, integrating and summarizing scientific, clinical, financial and market information
  • Travel required - 25%

Who You Are

Education & Languages

  • Master’s degree in business, marketing, finance, or science required
  • PhD or other relevant advanced degree preferred
  • English fluency

Professional Skills & Experience

  • 5 or more years of combined work experience in the health care industry (scientific, strategy, business development or marketing preferred), consulting, investment banking or venture capital
  • 1-2 years of previous business development experience at a non-profit, biotechnology, device or pharmaceutical company preferred
  • 1-3 years of experience managing a relevant functional line, unit or laboratory within a pharmaceutical company
  • Familiarity with biomarker and diagnostic assay development and commercialization
