The Vice President, Mission Driven Integration Center, N500, is seeking a Managing Director (MD) to lead N550, the Joint Staff and Combatant Commands Division. The MD should be a strong technical leader with an understanding of joint operations and proven success in leading large organizations towards achieving high impact outcomes. The director will engage at senior levels across Combatant Command sponsors to bring MITRE and other like-minded organizations to bear on National Defense Strategy and Combatant Command priority challenges. We are soliciting strong, technically and operationally deep candidates with a track record of delivering impact to sponsors while fostering a culture of collaboration and commitment to success.

N550 delivers approximately 200 PTS of effort across the Joint Staff, Geographic and Functional Commands. Over the last several years, MITRE’s roles and impact have elevated substantially, demanding continued elevation of the associated MITRE work program. National security and defense priorities will continue to provide ample technical challenges for which MITRE is uniquely suited to deliver operational mission impact.

The selected candidate will set the strategy and direction of the Division’s work program portfolio, strategically shape the work program, grow a diverse team of world-class technical talent, and foster a culture of collaboration and cooperation. The candidate will be accountable to the N500 VP for all aspects of the sponsor-facing and internal division operations. In addition, the MD will coordinate and integrate efforts closely with partner MDs in the Defense, Service, and Intelligence Centers and Divisions. The MD will also work with the MNS Cross-Cutting Priorities, aligning the division’s work programs with related efforts across the company for an increased mission impact for our sponsors.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Bring deep technical expertise, broad operational mission awareness, and innovative thinking to solve our sponsors’ most important and pressing problems.

  • Transform our work program by constantly aligning our efforts to our sponsor’s current priorities; anticipating future national security priorities; and applying innovative thinking to shape our tasks to have the greatest possible impact now and in the future.

  • Drive the organization to deliver outcomes and impact of consistently high quality

  • Bring the company to bear―MITRE Labs, the MITRE Innovation Program (MIP), MITRE Cross Cutting Priorities (CCPs), and Scalable Platform Solutions―to drive innovation.

  • Engage with academia, industry, and government to develop and bring the best solutions to our sponsors with urgency.

  • Travel extensively ( 30%) to CCMD locations and MITRE sites, engaging regularly with sponsors and MITRE teams to keep focus and progress on critical outcomes.

  • Grow our Work Program: Grow and shape our work and deliver on MITRE commitments

  • Align our work to the most critical current and anticipated priorities of our Sponsors; foster innovation and risk taking to bring disruptive solutions to Sponsors; Advance National Security Engineering Center (NSEC) initiatives and priorities.

  • Collaborate with stakeholder leaders across NSEC and MITRE to deliver value to the Joint Enterprise and myriad mission areas.

  • Challenge the department leaders to continually elevate their engagements and impact and bring the best talent available to the sponsor problem sets.

  • Grow our Team:

  • Promote high standards of technical excellence and have an operational understanding and a learning mindset.

  • Attract talent and develop our staff.

  • Serve as a role model, mentor, and advocate for leaders and staff.

  • Partner with government, industry, and academia to develop the best possible solutions for our sponsors for an even greater mission impact.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Proven experience with bringing large organizations to bear on sponsor challenges.

  • Collaborative and integrating mindset; demonstrated ability to partner for success.

  • Proven ability to lead, nurture, and develop technical talent and teams.

  • Effective at developing close working relationships with Combatant Command and operationally focused senior leaders, with the goal of being a trusted partner for the leadership on major initiatives, technical challenges, and priorities, focused on operational outcomes and results.

  • Demonstrated understanding of complex system of system acquisition and systems engineering processes.

  • Current Top-Secret Clearance with SCI

  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with research needs to support combatant command capabilities.

  • Experience with other FFRDCs and UARCs and an understanding of how their capabilities can be brought to bear in concert with MITRE for greater effect and impact.

  • Knowledge of one or more of the following priority focus areas: Joint All Domain Command and Control, Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (JEMSO), Mission Engineering and Analysis, Resilient Networks, Cyber Operations, Space Warfighting, NC3, C-C5ISRT.

  • Knowledge of MITRE offerings/capabilities to enable sponsor’s strategy & outcomes.

  • Expert understanding of joint operations, joint requirements processes, Combatant Commands, and role of Service Components to support combat operations and the challenges they collectively face.

  • Understanding of Service operations; Army, Air Force, Navy, USMC, and Space Force.

  • Understanding of combined/joint force operations and interoperability.
