MITRE is seeking a New Offering Incubation Lead to join a growing team of diverse innovation incubation enthusiasts within the MITRE Accelerator and its foundation, MITRE Engenuity – the company’s primary engines for collaborating and sharing MITRE innovations with the private sector. This team is responsible for identifying market gaps and problems of national importance where MITRE has relevant IP or capabilities and for developing business plans to launch new offerings and partnership efforts in the private sector.

The Incubation Lead will report to the Managing Director of Incubation and New Product Development. The person filling this role will be expected to own the development of new offerings in one or more of our focus sectors, depending on the team’s needs and the candidate’s interests and strengths: health data analytics, 5G, cybersecurity, transportation, and microelectronics. For reference, examples of ideas this team has launched to-date include the Center for Threat-Informed Defense (a collaborative cybersecurity R&D consortium with over 20 industry-leading participants), ATT&CK Evaluations – Enterprise and ICS (evaluations of commercial cybersecurity tools’ effectiveness against simulated real-world adversaries), the Open Generation Consortium (a privately-funded R&D consortium focused on innovative 5G use-cases), and MITRE ATT&CK Defender (an ATT&CK-based cybersecurity training and certification platform).

The ideal candidate thinks like an entrepreneur and has experience in identifying opportunities, evaluating market size, and finding product-market fit; the candidate is also motivated by our public good mission. The New Offering Incubation Lead should have exceptional business strategy skills, understanding of product management practices, and an appetite for taking smart risks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hunt for, evaluate, and lead the shaping of new business ideas and incubation opportunities in collaboration with MITRE and MITRE Engenuity teams

  • Define key milestones, targets, methods to test assumptions according to lean processes

  • Analyze customer requirements and competitive dynamics through industry interviews and secondary-source research

  • Define differentiation and assess product-market fit

  • Develop pro forma financials for business concepts, including market-based revenue models and full cost estimates

  • Develop go-to-market strategy, define business models, and articulate value proposition and pitches to potential customers

  • Build and manage relationships across the enterprise and externally, in order to create new and to enhance existing partnerships within the private sector

  • Provide go / no-go recommendations on new offerings to senior leadership

  • Provide guidance to junior team members who support incubation initiatives, when applicable

    Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing and evaluating business cases for new offerings or market segments

  • Experience with innovation funnel processes, including customer research, market sizing, developing value proposition and ideation

  • Ability to create a business hypothesis and to identify potential exit avenues

  • Ability to create and execute workplans, as well as to create metrics to evaluate success / failure of new business ideas

  • Strong skills and demonstrated track record in independently conducting market research and potential customer interviews to test hypotheses and to vet / refine business ideas

  • Experience with different types of business structures and delivery models for hardware and software products and/or services

  • Understanding of financial concepts necessary to conduct standard financial analysis (e.g., profit/loss analysis) and to build financial models in Excel

  • Demonstrated analytical problem-solving, both quantitative and qualitative

  • Excellent written, visual, and verbal communications skills – including excellent PowerPoint skills

  • Ability to strategically anticipate business opportunities, analyze product and/or service opportunities and/or partnership development

  • MBA or undergraduate degree in relevant field with at least 7 years of innovation, consulting, product management, or business strategy experience

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a startup or corporate venture, with demonstrated success executing new product development from idea discovery to launch

  • Experience / subject-matter expertise in one or more of the MITRE Accelerator’s focus areas (cybersecurity, health data, 5G, transportation, microelectronics)
