The External Communications Principal and Group Lead is a creative, skilled storyteller across multiple channels with a focus on media relations to promote MITRE’s impact and illustrate how we deliver on our mission: Solving Problems for a Safer World.

This role will manage two employees and be responsible for connecting communications goals and outcomes with business goals and outcomes and serving as an advisor to MITRE leadership and internal partners and stakeholders. We are looking for a self-starter and leader—someone who can manage people and projects while also doing hands-on work. Y ou will serve as a change champion by removing barriers, creating cross-team vision within the Strategic Communications Division, and driving measurable results for integrated communications campaigns.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create, implement and measure media strategies that extend MITRE’s relationships and secure coverage in national, technology, and government media (print, online and broadcast)

  • Oversee media and PR efforts in support of business development and corporate growth opportunities in partnership with marketing leads, business leaders, and external communications teams.

  • Create impactful content (e.g. content packages including social media, fact sheets, news releases, and multi-media assets) for multi-channel and visual storytelling that differentiates MITRE and supports its growth strategy and business priorities

  • Create communications plans and support all PR activities, including events, formation of a new speakers bureau, and corporate awards program, including Best Places to Work and executive visibility, as well as chambers of commerce activities and VIP lab tours

  • Manage and coach team members to deliver on integrated communications plan objectives and deliver high performing media relations campaigns

  • Develop crisis communications plans and scripts for internal and external channels and serve as proxy, as required, for Department Head on company-wide incident response teams

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and senior executives on external communications opportunities and preparation

  • Serve on-call to manage media inquiries, social media, and crisis communications

  • Oversee department reporting products including the monthly Spotlight for executive leadership and media analytics

Required Skills:

  • Write persuasively to create awareness and influence through news releases, op-eds, social media, talking points, and other content packages

  • Public relations experience in B2B and/or B2G technology and demonstrated ability to create media strategies and communications plans with measurable objectives

  • Management experience including having direct reports, serving as a mentor to staff, and working in a matrixed business services environment

  • Expert in the art of media relations and understanding of digital storytelling

  • Experience supporting senior and executive leadership and managing communications in one-on-one and small group settings

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, delivering to or exceeding plan goals

  • Knowledge of technology and government contracting industry and ability to develop strong and compelling stories about complex, technical topics

  • Problem solve and execute communication plans while operating in a fast-paced environment and manage changing priorities

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to interface with technical and non-technical audiences


  • A college degree in communication, business, or a related field

  • 10-12 years of demonstrated success in public relations and media relations program planning, implementation, and measurement

  • APR or similar credential preferred
