Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Creative Director, the Senior Art Director, Campaigns is the department’s brand design expert and plays a high impact role in setting up the direction for UMass brand campaigns, programs, and initiatives. This position deploys a unique and seasoned set of creatives skills to develop creative solutions and solve an array of design problems for internal clients. Creates externally facing artwork for brand campaigns and other high-level design initiatives.

The position requires close collaboration with third-party agencies and members of the Marcom Group to develop on-brand, compelling, cohesive, and effective marketing campaigns, and visual solutions.

Essential Functions

  • Manages metric driven brand campaigns from concept to implementation to meet the needs of a diverse set of internal customers.

  • Partners with various stakeholder groups to strategize and discover brand campaign needs across the institution. Collaborates with internal marketing and communications professionals, Admissions and Enrollment departments, and Senior leadership within MarCom.

  • Ensures that campaign metrics and data (ie Demographics) are translated in all marketing deliverables.

  • Manages external partnerships including agencies, photography and videography freelancers. Designs, sketches, executes, and develops creative concepts and brand campaigns across a mix of mediums including branding, campaign, digital, multimedia, out of home, activation, and broadcast. Maps content creation with the nuances of varied and unique audiences.

  • Produces creative work and solutions that are consistent with University brand and visual guidelines. Ensures brevity and leverages brand style guides, strategic principles, and templates. Stays up to date on industry trends and marketing campaigns in order to meet competitive and complex challenges of an evolving space; including but not limited to social media strategies.

  • Follows a concept-design approach in terms of fundamentals (typography, composition, color theory, layout and balance.)

  • Manages assignments across all channels, including marketing campaigns.

  • Distills and incorporates feedback/input from leadership.

  • Participates in brainstorming sessions with the team and promotes team alignment.

  • Communicates University’s visual identity standards to the college community as needed, including how to apply branding guidelines. Reviews materials for consistency and provides feedback to campus partners as needed.

  • Develops and nurtures strong, trusting client relationships.

  • Works with the Executive Director to organize, design, and lead design pitches and presentations to campus partners.

  • Mentors creative staff by developing and guiding creative thinking and execution.

  • Works in collaboration to prioritize campaigns and manage production schedules. Liaison with freelancers and vendors to ensure the work is produced at the desired quality, on time, and within budget.

  • Checks the quality of creative output in all mediums, troubleshoots, and collaborates on solutions for improvement.

  • Retains, collaborates with, and directs vendors and freelancers on creative initiatives.

  • Develops and demonstrates multicultural awareness and contributes to the creation of an inclusive, diverse, and respectful community. Engages in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 7 years’ of brand and/or marketing campaign experience or a Master’s of Fine Arts in Graphic Design with 3 years’ of brand and/or marketingexperience.  

  • Proven progressive work experience working on brand campaigns, creative design, and digital media.

  • Proven experience as a sophisticated creative/critical thinker and problem-solver.

  • Expertise in conceptual design, world-class creative concepts across a mix of mediums (i.e. branding, campaign, digital, multimedia, out of home, activation).

  • Deep knowledge of social media requirements and the tools for delivering for each platform.

  • Experience in art directing photo and video shoots.

  • Able to effectively communicate art issues to non-artists, exceptional presentation skills for both internal and external creative presentations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Detail and deadline oriented.

  • Knowledge of and ability to adapt to a variety of creative collaboration tools required.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite including HTML/CSS, and Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint.

  • Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure).

  • Experience working in the higher education or related field preferred.

  • Supervisory and management abilities preferred.

Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-5:00 pm.

  • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
