Reporting to the Department Chair of the McCormack Department of Sport Management (MSM), the Communications, Events & Alumni Relations Manager works collaboratively with the MSM faculty and staff, Isenberg Marketing & Communications (MarCom), development staff, and other key personnel at the University level to develop and manage strategic sport management alumni and current student engagement activities and communications.
Collaborates regularly with MHM Chair, Associate Chair, and McCormack Center for Sport Research and Education Director to develop and implement overall departmental strategy for marketing, branding, communications and student and external/industry engagement.
Contributes to strategic and logistical management of internal and external communications, event management & alumni relations for MHM Department.
Develops and implements strategy for marketing, branding, publicity, and communications; maintains social media accounts in line with strategy.
Manages MHM department website for editorial changes and content additions.
Collaborates with MHM and Isenberg faculty/staff on the adoption of UConnect platform and assists in the ongoing management and maintenance of the platform once implemented.
Coordinates with Marcom to develop, produce and disseminate marketing and promotion materials, including Undergraduate and Graduate brochures.
Manages MHM’s social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube channels as well as LinkedIn Alumni Group; produces timely and effective social media posts, and reviews social media analytics to explore new methods for marketing through alternative channels.
Manages the relationship between MHM department and its four student clubs for purposes of enhancing communications between department and all clubs, ensuring consistency of clubs’ usage of Isenberg and MHM brand; and promoting club events.
Manages Department’s annual McCormack Sport Leaders Forum in New York City, including budget oversight, identification, and management of student team; stages of weekly meetings with entire team and functional groups; manages the relationship with presenting partner and venue; leads oversight of programming, registration process, day-of-event activities, and event pre and post publicity initiatives.
Works with Isenberg Development Office to identify, create, plan and manage alumni relations events to enhance alumni involvement with the Department and to generate donor revenue.
Plans, manages, and promotes the Department’s Annual Awards Banquet (each spring) and Executive in Residence program (each fall).
Manages, in collaboration with MHM Chair, the McCormack Young Alumni Advisory Council (MYAAC), monthly meetings, assists Council in fulfillment of its initiatives; maintains relationships with members; tracks members’ required donations; and oversees annual MYAAC Scholarship program.
Serves as editor of digital newsletters and an annual printed “year in review” newsletter, including content development, writing, layout and design, procurement of photos, printing, and mailing.
Responsible for oversight of the Department website and proactively develop and write new stories for the website.
Seeks, identifies, and arranges guest speaker schedules and notifies Department of key visitors.
Serves as a key member, in conjunction with MHM Chair, Associate Chair, and UG Program Director, in the undergraduate scholarship program, including promotion and organization of all scholarship recipients in Academic Works.
Develops and executes, in conjunction with other University units, the Department’s annual 2-day social media-driven #UMassGives fundraising campaign, including developing strategies and support materials to gain the proactive involvement of all MHM faculty and the MYAAC.
Identifies and executes publicity initiatives to maximize department visibility and reputation.
Oversees all Department photography and videography needs for publicity and promotion of the Department.
Working in conjunction with other Isenberg functions, maintains and promotes alumni database.
Hires and supervises student workers for MHM Department including managing budget and hours.
Manages budget and product procurement for the McCormack Department gifting program.
Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Two (2) years of equivalent work experience in events, marketing, communications or business.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with a variety of stakeholders with multiple interests and varying levels of authority to achieve organizational goals.
Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong organizational skills and administrative aptitude with ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
Demonstrated ability in management and content creation across various social media platforms.
Proven experience and comfort with public speaking and conflict resolution.
Demonstrated ability using desktop publishing and design software (i.e., Microsoft Publisher, Adobe InDesign).
Demonstrated knowledge and willingness to keep up to date understanding about the sport industry.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Typical office environment.
Required to work some nights and weekends; some 2-3 day trips will be required.
This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
