Job Summary
The National Science Foundation Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges and Science (CBIKS) Science Communication Specialist assists the Storywork Working Group to develop & distribute informal science education materials.
Essential Functions
Collaborates with the CBIKS Storywork Working group to translate research into visually appealing and digestible media that meets the Center’s strategic goals for communication and education.
Creates story boards, illustrations, and writes infographics, graphic novels, or comic style science education materials.
Uses created materials to produce high quality print and electronic publications.
Coordinates and supports the dissemination of educational materials to various stakeholder groups.
Ensures a complete development cycle and workflow of projects from concept to completion and maintains an up-to-date production/status report on all job assignments.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Bachelor's degree.
Experience creating illustrations for graphic novels or comic book style materials.
Experience creating/developing storyboarding concepts.
Experience with project management.
Highly organized and detail oriented.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Multicultural awareness and the ability to cultivate an inclusive, and respectful university community.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain productive relationships.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Proficiency in Adobe creative suite.
Understanding of Indigenous communities and Indigenous research concepts.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- Typical office environment.
Additional Details
This is a 5-year, term-limited position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon grant funding.
May supervise graduate and undergraduate assistants.
Occasional travel may be required.
This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position is non-unit, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees Non-Unit (Professional/or Classified) Employee Personnel Policy.
Work Schedule
- Monday – Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
Salary Information
Salary commensurate with skills and experience.
