Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager of Classroom Technology Services (CTS), AV Tech II is responsible for support of operation and maintenance of the distance learning and video conferencing systems installed in classrooms and auditoria across the UMass campus that support multimodal courses that can be offered face-to-face, online, or mixed, and can have synchronous or asynchronous components. Individual in this position will provide set up and technical support of the standard audio-visual equipment in teaching spaces across the campus as well as for university sponsored events. Additionally, the AV Tech II will provide training to faculty and staff on the usage of the audio-visual and video conferencing equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Support the operation and maintenance of the distance learning video conferencing classrooms and conference rooms, which includes scheduling training, troubleshooting connections with remote sites and working with the equipment vendor when necessary to resolve technical problems.

  • Repair and maintain in accordance with all applicable policies, a wide range, of audio visual and video equipment, including video conferencing systems, video production and linear and nonlinear video editing systems, video computer projection systems, DVD, Blu-ray, monitor and video cameras.

  • Provide technical support and training for the standard suite of audio-visual equipment located in classrooms across campus.

  • Maintain departmental records concerning repair of equipment, ordering of replacement parts and equipment inventory.

  • Provide training and technical support to faculty on use of projection facilities including video/computer display devices in campus auditoria and classrooms.

  • Provide assistance to faculty on choosing presentation settings for optimal display with video equipment.

  • Schedule and distribute audio visual equipment to campus locations as required.

  • Install, repair and maintain sound systems and projection facilities in campus auditoria.

  • Program EXTRON controllers, install program codec, cisco and Lifesize technologies in classrooms.

Other Functions

  • When necessary, drive the CTS vehicles to transport audio visual equipment on campus.

  • Occasional travel to other UMass campus locations such as Newton, Springfield and Gloucester to confer with multi-modal partners.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in maintaining, repairing and testing IP based AV conferencing equipment. (An Associate Degree in electronics, audio-visual technology or related field of study may be substituted for one year of the required experience.)

  • Ability to read and interpret schematic drawings and manuals of electronic equipment.

  • Ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to install codec equipment and program Extron/Crestron controllers.

  • Experience using computers as display tools for use with a wide variety of display technologies.

  • Familiarity with Cisco/Lifesize systems.

  • Knowledge of PC and Mac operating platforms.

  • Experience training clients on the proper use and care of audio-visual equipment.

  • Strong customer service skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong communication skills; both oral and written.

  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Must be able to lift 60 lbs

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 2:00 p.m. – 10 p.m. (37.5 hours per week)

Some off-hour work may be required on the weekends to respond to high level event coverage.
