AbbVie Senior Director, Search & Evaluation in Worcester, Massachusetts


Position Overview:

The Search and Evaluation group actively supports the global Business Development (BD) goals by executing on strategic opportunities from academic institutions, biotech/ pharma companies and venture firms for potential research collaborations, in-licensing/ out-licensing assets, venture investments, and company acquisitions. The group is responsible for leading the global search efforts for assets of high strategic value aligning with the needs of AbbVie R&D organization’s pipeline goals, and conducting thorough technical due diligence to ensure an in-depth understanding of the science behind each of the those opportunities. The Senior Director, Search & Evaluation will support these efforts through developing and executing all aspects of the external BD strategy for potential Licensing opportunities that are consistent with external BD strategies for the advancement of AbbVie’ s pipeline, and driving sustainable growth for the Company. Key Responsibilities:

As the leader of the Immunology Search and Evaluation team, the successful candidate will be responsible for driving the overall licensing objectives, strategies and tactics for growth of AbbVie’s Immunology business. While directly reporting to the Vice President, Search and Evaluation, the individual will have a strong working relationship with the Vice Presidents of Immunology Discovery and Clinical Development, as well as Heads of AbbVie's Ventures and Business Development groups. To effectively contribute to these activities, they will need to possess a deep scientific knowledge in the field of immunology. Since the individual will lead and mentor team members residing at multiple sites, they will also have experience in effectively prioritizing multiple opportunities and coordinating the workflow of a team. This person will also work to ensure internal and external communication of the external Immunology sourcing strategy, and will be expected to represent AbbVie as a spokesperson in external partnering and scientific conferences. They will build and leverage a network of connections in the academic and biotechnology world to raise awareness of AbbVie’s partnering objectives and capabilities. The person will work constructively with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams to ensure effective communication, efficient decision-making, and completion of transactions in a timely manner. They will be responsible for integrating input from various functional areas across the organization to create high quality, clear and concise due diligence reports and presentations with recommendations to AbbVie’s Executive Management team.



  • PhD in a related scientific field (e.g. biology, chemistry) highly preferred. Advanced business degree is a plus
  • 12 years (BS) of drug development or business development work experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries required / 10 with Masters / 8 with PhD
  • Must possess a solid foundation in drug discovery processes with familiarity in one aspect of Drug Development (e.g., CMC, pre-clinical, clinical, RA)
  • Must possess solid foundation of generally accepted BD practices, including basic financial terms, governance review, and tracking progress
  • Demonstrated project management and leadership skills to lead/manage multifunctional teams in evaluating target opportunities and producing high quality analyses
  • Ability to drive projects to deliver timely results and follow through on commitments
  • Proven effective communication skills to clearly communicate business strategies and capabilities internally and externally, present individual and team recommendations clearly and concisely, and promote cross-functional communication
  • Strong networking skills to reach out to a broad range of industry decision makers to keep abreast of emerging opportunities
  • Demonstrated negotiation and influencing skills in a deal settings to creatively solve problems with internal and external stakeholders
