DePuy Synthes, part of the Global Orthopeadics Group within Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices is recruiting for a R&D Manager, Product Development aligned to our Sports Medicine and Shoulder Reconstruction business. This position will be located in Raynham, MA.

  • Individual should invoke a passion around innovation and influence the organization to think differently as we look to disrupt the industry.

  • Construct a balanced portfolio that bridges the short-term needs of the organization with its long term aspirations.

  • Responsible for their teams’ concept, design, development and commercialization of medical devices.

  • Oversee the creation of design development plans and coach teams to execute aggressively and predictably.

  • Lead their team in the generation of Intellectual Property.

  • Drive collaboration with external (e.g. clinicians) and internal customers (e.g. strategic marketing) to identify unmet user needs to inform pipeline.

  • Set clear expectations for direct reports and establish roles and responsibilities to manage deliverables to meet business commitments.

  • Hire, develop, mentor and train engineering talent.

  • Effectively communicate with Business leaders, Executive Management and key stakeholders on a regular basis to ensure alignment on project baseline (scope, schedule, and budget), report on execution of project deliverables and mitigation of risks.

  • Work with key stakeholders to develop business cases and financial models.

  • Be responsible for creation and approval of your group’s yearly budget.

  • Promote and foster the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and compliance, transparency and actively support our compliance program-related initiatives and activities.

  • Engage with surgeons across the globe either in the operating room or one of our labs.

  • Create meaningful relationships with KOL’s that can be utilized as a sounding board for future innovation.


  • A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in engineering is required.

  • Master’s Degree (business or related field) or Doctorate in Engineering is preferred.

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional working experience is required.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience within product development is required.

  • Regulated industry experience is required; medical device experience is preferred.

  • Experience with Shoulder Arthroplasty is preferred.

  • Previous experience within the design, development and commercialization of new products is required.

  • Experience engaging with clinicians and/or customers to discuss and evaluate design concepts to drive innovation is preferred.

  • Prior experience managing an engineering team is preferred.

  • Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) is preferred.

  • Six Sigma Black Belt is preferred.

  • Experience with Portfolio Planning is preferred.

  • The ability and comfort in working in a matrix organization is preferred.

  • Ability to work within a cadaver lab and operating room setting is required.

  • This position may require up to 10% travel and based in Raynham, MA.
