Shire R&D Business Analytics Lead, Associate Director in Lexington, Massachusetts

The R&D Business Analytics group is responsible for developing analyses and insights to address R&D senior management business questions, to inform pipeline portfolio planning and to support R&D strategic decision making. This role reports to the Head of R&D Business Analytics.

Responsibilities

  • 60%: Independently drive decision making through rigorous, fact based quantitative analysis and the synthesis of insights into actionable recommendations

  • 20%: Work closely with R&D teams (functions, development teams, etc,) and across the organization (corporate strategy, business development, finance, etc) to develop integrated assessments

  • 20%: Refine and deliver tools, processes and materials to support the discussion and communication of strategic, portfolio and program information

Examples of the types of analysis carried out in this role:

  • Lead portfolio assessments to prioritize R&D programs and provide clear recommendations to governance bodies that maximize the value of Shire’s pipeline

  • Carry out competitive analysis, benchmarking, and primary and secondary research to understand industry best practices and identify actions to boost R&D productivity

  • Model the portfolio and R&D resources to support investment planning and decision making for both internal programs and external opportunities

  • Implement business processes that enable pipeline risk management e.g. assessment of programs’ probability of success

  • Collect and synthesize information for critical R&D strategic initiatives and Long Range Plans

  • Drive pipeline program decision analyses and develop recommendations to optimize program development

  • Support ad hoc special projects requested by R&D leaders

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Required: 3+ years work experience in Management Consulting sector or 6+ years work experience in strategic planning and/or portfolio management industry roles

  • Required: MBA from an accredited program or an advanced medical / biological sciences degree (MD or PhD)

  • Required: Biotech/Pharmaceutical sector experience

  • Strongly preferred: Knowledge of drug development from scientific, commercial and financial perspectives

Key Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

  • Demonstrated expertise in problem solving and communication of complex analyses

  • Expert analytical skills; comfortable evaluating data, drawing insights and recommending actions; highly competent in MS Excel and PowerPoint

  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally and with senior level management

  • Independent and self-motivated but also works well in a team environment

  • Proven influencing, facilitation and negotiation skills

  • Stellar written and oral communication skills; experience in developing presentations/reports for senior executive level audiences

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Complexity and Problem Solving:

  • Develop analyses and insights to address R&D senior management business questions, to inform pipeline portfolio planning and to support R&D strategic decision making.

  • Generate recommendations under tight timelines while maintaining high standards of quality

  • Build tools and processes to support pipeline related decision making
