Duties & Responsibilities The User Experience Librarian will work with the Countway Library community to shape and build user-centric, forward thinking support for the Library’s student, faculty and research needs. This position will develop and coordinate programs focused on improving the user experience of the Coutnway Library and will engage users in the assessment of our services and spaces. Working with students, library staff and faculty across Harvard Medical School the User Experience Librarian is responsible for conducting usability testing and user research, and applying findings and expertise to build a framework for iterative design, implementation, and review of learning objects. The User Experience Librarian will conceive, propose, and design user interfaces through which teaching, learning, and assessment is conducted over the Web, based on contemporary technologies and techniques and accounting for the multiple modes of interaction (personal and portable computers, tablets, and smartphones, etc.). Interface with students, staff, faculty and users to understand their needsIdentify how user behavior operates with respect to Countway resources and information seekingDesign, plan, create, and communicate appealing, usable, and effective interface designs for mobile, web, and social media interfaces.Designs the visual layout and other promotional products with the goal of enhancing appeal to the user while maximizing functionality, ensuring buy in of stakeholders and appropriate managementPresent and communicate designs and design goals to teammates, partners, and leadership.Stay plugged into emerging technologies/industry trends and apply them into operations and library activities based on user experiences and information seeking behaviorConduct usability studies and analyze statistics and results and recommend ways to enhance access to library resources based on these resultsMonitor effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of promotional campaigns including but not limited to the Countway web site and social media. Analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of campaigns in an effort to maximize resultsWorks closely with IT and Communication departments to enhance user experience Collaborate with librarians to create and teach curriculum related to technology, with a current focus on data visualizations, gamification, and digital realities such as virtual realityUtilize data for cost benefit analysis, effective teaching, and participant demographicsDemonstrates skills and extensive knowledge concerning user requirements, usability and focus group methodologies, and analytical reportingMeets regularly with project stakeholders, program participants, and library leadership to gather information and report progressAssist in grant reporting and writing

Basic Qualifications Masters in Library Science and 2+ years’ experience of user-centered design and or related experience within a library or related setting required.

Additional Qualifications Experience testing methodologies, subsystems and usability and accessibility concerns. Familiarity with mobile web environments and adaptive/responsive web design methods. Displays ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and video formatMaintains excellent writing and language skillsDemonstrates an understanding of library information seeking behaviorExcellent organizational, time and project management skillsAccuracy and attention to detailStrong analytical & organizational abilitiesExperience designing for library environments and/or higher education preferred.Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript desired; working knowledge of the jQuery JavaScript library highly desirable.Experience with multiple data gathering methodologies, including formal/informal usability testing, focus groups, surveys, interviews, and ethnographic research

Additional Information This is a two year term appointment with the possibility of extension/renewal contingent on funding.
