Job Description

TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM DIRECTOR, MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI)-Tata Center for Technology and Design, to play an important role in building on the initial success of the Tata Center by leading its efforts to shape and position promising projects for large scale deployment and social impact in developing countries. Will work closely with the director, executive director, and associated faculty, students, and other researchers to conceive product and service strategies based on technology created within the center; develop new business strategies to bring these products and services to market; and identify prospective commercial development partners. Will also work closely with MIT’s entrepreneurial ecosystem (i.e., Tata Trusts, Foundation for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship, FISE, Deshpande Center, D-Lab, Venture Mentoring Service, Martin Trust Center, Legatum Center, Media Lab Emerging Worlds Program, JWAFS, MIT Engine); and advise and teach Tata Center students by keeping regular office hours, leading extracurricular training workshops, and participating in the weekly Tata Proseminar as a lecturer and coach.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: Ph.D. in a technical field; teaching and student mentoring experience in a university setting; at least three years’ work experience post Ph.D. in a managing role within a technology investment firm; significant senior management experience; familiarity with intellectual property, business development, and technology licensing; substantial familiarity with sub-Saharan Africa and India, with active commercial and investment relationships in the developing world; familiarity with investment and the investment community relating to social enterprises; strong interest in technology development and related policy, especially for developing countries; knowledge of capital formation, business creation, and early stage business development; and significant experience working with early stage entrepreneurs and supporting high risk companies.
