Job Description

PROGRAM MANAGER, MIT-AFRICA INITIATIVE, Center for International Studies-MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI), to promote internship programs in Africa, recruit and select MIT students, and match students with and prepare them for their internships. Will oversee program budgets to assure funding; find, propose, and develop new funding sources and program activities; arrange events/activities to steward current sponsors; develop curriculum for and train interns in culture, history, and politics of host countries; develop relationships and maintain close contact with host institutions; ensure the quality of the internships and expand the pool of partners; administer seed fund grant programs for MIT faculty; organize on-campus events related to Africa for the MIT community; develop information materials about the programs; handle communication with host firms, educational institutions, and collaborators; and update databases, manage accounts, and direct student employees.

The MIT-Africa Initiative creates educational and research opportunities for MIT students and faculty in Africa and develops partnerships connecting Africa and MIT.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: M.A./M.S. and at least three years’ relevant professional experience or a bachelor's degree and at least five years’; strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills including excellent command of written and spoken English; solid knowledge of Africa’s corporate, higher education, and research systems; ability to grasp and communicate broad picture of the program to students, faculty, and potential African partners/sponsors; ability to prioritize tasks, schedule and account for complex travel arrangements, schedule meetings, work as part of a larger team, and manage multiple tasks under pressure; proficiency with Microsoft Office and willingness to learn database and web editing software; and discretion and good judgment with confidential information/issues. Must be willing to work evenings periodically and to travel to Africa several times per year.
